Analogue upgrade

Hi all,how much an Sme IV tonearm will improve my analogue section?TT is a Gyrodec with Rega Rb 301 and Benz Micro Glider SL into HC2/SL.Will it be worth?Thank you.

IIRC, the SME IV & V were designed using the Gyrodec and complement that deck particularly well, as you might expect.  I think that the IV is perhaps the better choice on the Gyro - it looks the part too! It's a beautiful arm, built and finished like nothing else.

I have the IV on a Gyro. I have never had another arm on it so not much use other than to say it is beautifully made, looks fantastic and is easy to set up. If you have the money then go for it.

Thanks Richard.Seems it's going to be on my short list then...In the meanwhile my system is producing a beautiful sound with my last 282 purchase. In this moment a I'm listening to Winehouse's "help youself".Moving beauty.

I have had the SME 309 on a Gyro for a few years and it works very nicely. A  touch cheaper than the Series IV but high quality nonetheless.

Not sure how relevant relative cost is, or the vector versus performance limits, but the 309 is priced more in line with the Gyro itself. Viz improving the deck, I like the HR power supply and Orbe clamp but haven’t been convinced by the Orbe platter. Lots of debate to be found about all of that.

Situations like this always pose questions.  Gyro.HR PSU/SME IV vs Orbe/Rega 301?

Hi Strat, thank you.If this situation is frequently discussed then it means that differences are not night and day?Esthetically I prefer the Gyro. Thanks Pigeon.

i would take the 309 with a better cart personally.

Agree, not night and day - and best to invest in the fundamentals before tinkering at the margins. You need an arm and a cart, right! ????

To FR’s suggestion, I use Lyra Delos which again seems a good price and performance match. Before that I had Sumiko BPS, still MC but lower end of the MC scale and less than half the price of the Delos. Night and day, probably not, but dusk and dawn, yes. The next cart up in the Lyra range (Kleos) is twice the price again. I haven’t tried it. An area where a dealer’s guidance and set-up skills are extremely valuable. Much easier to research and assess, say, a CDP than the complexity of a TT.

Go Avians! And fans thereof. ????

Hey Pigeon, i have a delos too, excellent for the price ( around 1k GBP), on my rega rp10. But i had some years before a delos too on my past sme 20/ sme5: very good match too.

I think that an sme4 on a gyrodeck is a bit too much.  An sme309 must be the sweet pot.

Thank you all so far.
