300DR functionally becomes a 135!
Posted by: Huge on 05 May 2018
Aaagh! my 300DR has become mono! Right channel has gone AWOL.
Swap input leads at the 272 end - right channel still silent -> 272 exonerated.
Swap right input lead - right channel still silent, test lead with a meter -> input lead exonerated.
Swap speaker cables at 300 DR end - left speaker silent, right speaker OK -> Speaker cables and speakers exonerated.
Culprit = 300DR. No Music
If other things go wrong this could become a very serious problem.
Ouch.
I presume the normal shut-down-wait-5-minutes-restart did not help?
Shutdown, wait overnight, restart didn't work either.
However, I think I know where I can borrow a Nait 5i for the meantime while it gets fixed, so I'm not panicking anymore.
Hi Huge, sorry to hear you have a mono 300 dr, be interested in the cause, when it has been fixed.
Stereo always a myth!

I’m sure it will be sorted.
Have a spare SN2, but might be a bit too far to travel....

Indeed - just mono on the pre-amp, connect one speaker and all is well
Take advantage of the situation Huge.
Dear wife, my beloved amp has become broken. I take this to be a sigh from god that a 500 DR is in order/ on order.
things for reasons you know dear????
A power amp should last for 10 years at least with no problem?.

Although to be fair, Huge only needs one 135!
Active 500s
HUGE - As not mentioned in your list cabling changes, have you checked (test?)/re-seated the burndies, given the powering arrangements for the 300?
Your amp has gone on strike after Beethoven 7 again - what I fully understand.
Yes, re-seated the Burndies - but not checked their continuity with a meter as I don't know their correct wiring (although I assume 1:1 and I can cross check L/R).
One thing I haven't done is to swap the Burndies over - that was my next plan after checking that I can borrow the Nait.
(I may also cross check L&R later if there's a delay getting hold of the Nait.)
Thank you all for the humour - you've lifted my spirits considerably.
Much appreciated
Eleanor
Glad you are keeping your spirit up
Not sure I would be in a good mood if my lowly 250dr went on strike
As for " a power amp should last at least 10 years"
If I didn't get 35+ years like my nait 1 ...I would be well pissed...
I don't think it's at all typical for this to happen and there's always a low level of statistical risk of failure.

The Nait 5i should bring a nice lift in performance over the 300s

Yes, easier to use; not so critical of setup!
One must look at this “happening” in a positive way. After sending it back to the mothership, it will be returned like new. The DR (transistors remember the big hold up???) had problems a while way back when. You may of had a naughty set. I my self have witness a new 250 Dr (pre hold up) Vs a upgraded 250.2 to Dr(post hold up), I can tell you the upgraded 250.2 just destroyed the factory new 250 Dr on the same system and it was cold!
Im sure it will come back better than ever, I’m looking forward to your post.
always remember if it’s been made it can be repaired.
now none of them get close to my nap 135’s for musicality but we won’t go there ????
Oh b***** ***l it's the 272 not the 300, and it's an entire channel that's failed not just the DIN 4 outputs.
The right channel has no output at all through the RCA or either of the DIN output sockets - of course as my cables are mono and 'handed' swapping them over between the two DINs didn't change anything as Ch2 out had failed on BOTH DIN 4 sockets. I only twigged this when I used the RCA pre-out from the 272 into the AV input of the 5i.
So congrats to seakayaker - you got it right, well spotted!
About the only thing I can do now is analogue out from the Chromecast into the Nait.
Well, at least I won't be having problems with the Naim app for the moment!
Not as simple as bashed the balance and turned it off / over to the left
I’d do a factory reset then try again
Hi Stephanie,
Good idea... Unfortunately it didn't work, but it was well worth trying, thank you.
Hi Huge
Clean the contacts of the Burndies sockets and plugs.
