Naim n-Vi as CDP through Dac-V1

Posted by: angelodipa on 06 May 2018

Hello everyone

I have the opportunity to buy a Naim n-Vi with very little price. I already have a Dac V1.

I would like to understand some things:

- Can I use n-Vi as a CDP using the coaxial optical output and connect it to the Dac V1?

- Can I connect to the n-Vi via "aux in" the surround back output of the AV2 (already in my possession) and use the n-Vi as the final amp for the 7.1? (I already have the Nap 200 for the front and the V175 for surround and central)

I know that the n-Vi is not a HiEnd CDP because it is "only" a DVD player ... but I have a really good opportunity and it makes sense only if I can scream n-Vi as described above ..

Thank you all in advance for the valuable contribution ...

In theory, yes you can hook up the n-Vi via the coaxial digital out to an external DAC such as the DAC-V1.  However, it's a DVD player so a bit clunkier to use as a CD player.  Set the output menu to PCM 2 channel output for best sound.

As for your second question, you'll need either an extra amp for 7.1.

Bear in mind that the n-Vi is relatively cheap secondhand for a reason.  If anything goes wrong then it's for parts only.

Yes, don't accidentally feed anything other than PCM 2 Channel into a DAC-V1, trust me, it will make a really really bad noise.  I accidentally selected Dolby 5.1 while something was playing on my Blu-Ray player into it, and had the volume on the amp reasonably cranked up, damn near blew my head off, and not in a good way.

Thanks for your input on the n-Vi Richard...very valuable sage advice with the spare parts.  Were one to need to replace something like the DVD transport, do you think that that would be possible?  I am emailing naim directly, but respect your opinion!

Thanks

AFAIK the transports are no longer available, but you could check with Naim just in case a batch has unexpectedly turned up in the meantime...
