New system needs suggestions
Posted by: Kwan on 11 May 2018
Hi all,
I have Sony HAP-Z1ES has streamer, plan to get Supernait 2 and pair with Proac DB1.
My room size 3.5m x 3m, Ther will be a coffee table in front of speaker.
Please advise the above set up. Many thanks
What advice is needed? Loudspeakercable, coffee table etc?
Have you listened to that combination? If not, that would be worth doing if you can before committing to them. Ideally in your own room.
And placement in the room, both of the speakers and listening position, can make quite a difference, so if possible it is best to try to approach flexibly, and be prepared to try different layouts until you find what sounds best.
Sorry, I didn’t made it clear on my concerns, I need advise on below:
1. Is Proac DB1 good combination with SN2?
2. Is Proac DB1 too “big” for my room?
3. Anyone tried Sony HAP-Z1ES with SN2 before?
I did listen to Proac 1sc before with XS2, it sounds good, I think SN2 and DB1 would sound better, but there is demo available in where I live.
Thanks again.
Sorry, I didn’t made it clear of my concerns:
1. Is Proac DB1 and SN2 combine well?
2. Is my room too small for Proac DB1 ?
3. Anyone using Sony Hap-Z1ES connects to SN2, how is sounds?
Thanks again.
Why this Sony? The technology used in it is a bit limited (naimly no UPnP playback).
The rest is OK (including the coffee table).
I (mostly) agree with Adam...
The SN2 will drive the Proac DB1s very well - a good match.
The Proac DB1s probably have a bit too much bass extension for that room so it likely that you'll need to put bungs into the bass ports to get an even bass response.
I also suspect that the Sony Hap-Z1ES is likely to prove to be the weak point in that system - there are some rather 'odd' technical choices in its design which mean that its sonic characteristics are quite far removed from the characteristic Naim sound. Not that it seems to be a 'bad' player, just not in the 'Naim camp' of sonic presentation.
Where I disagree with Adam is about the coffee table. It may turn out to be a problem - you'll have to listen with and without it to see how much of a problem it is in reality!
One can always 'test drive' various coffee tables - wooden top, glass top, MDF etc to determine the optimal combination of size and resonance characteristics )
On a serious note though.... As this is a Naim forum, as we are all a bit 'skewed' here.... source first still stands though... see if you can find one of Naim's own network players (NDX being a good match for the SuperNait 2)
If I get SN2 and Proac, I cannot afford a NDX or a Naim Dac.
I suspect Proac DB1 is too “powerful “ for my room as well.
thanks for your replies, I will have to think through other alternative.
How about a SuperUniti (this one would have to be pre-loved or ex-demo) or a Nova?
This should give you a good platform with a minimum box count (of one).
I did through of Nova, but no chance to listen to at the moment.

I wouldn't patently eliminate the DB1 from consideration. Extended bass in a small cubic room might be a bit much, but you can work with speaker and seating positioning. You never know in a given room.
In your situation I'd demo the DB1 versus the Proac Tablette 10. The 10 don't go as deep with bass and might be a better fit. I never heard the DB1, but having heard the 10 at a dealer was impressed with their overall tonal balance and a notably smooth midrange delivery. A SN2 ought to command the 10 quite well.
Thanks for all the comments and input.
I decided to hold on to my plan for few months at least, due to possible relocation.
Thanks again to all, I will come back when things settle.
In a few months time, the ND5XS 2 should be out and, combined with a Nait XS, would not cost a lot more than a Supernait and give you lots of upgrade potential not to mention flexibility if you do relocate.
