ND555 specification - what a load of... mistakes?

Posted by: rjstaines on 20 May 2018

I just looked at the ND555 specs on the Naim web site and I'm seeing some wierd and wonderful connections, like a 5pin din INPUT and THREE digital OUTPUTS (see below my copy/paste).

Anyone can make a mistake, but hey, there's surely a limit when you're tasked with creating a web page for a world flagship streamer...

Am I being too harsh, or is this player really more equipped than anyone could have hoped for?

Connectivity

Audio Inputs
2 x optical TOSLink (up to 24bit/96kHz)
2 x coaxial RCA (up to 24bit/192kHz, DoP 64Fs)
1 x BNC (up to 192kHz, DoP 64Fs)
1 x RCA
1 x 5-pin DIN

Audio Outputs
1 x RCA
1 x 5-pin DIN

and...

Is this thread the Naim forum equivalent of Groundhog day ?

So those of us who already own the burndies can confidently expect a significant discount (£700?) on the £13k asking price. Happy days.

Except, according to the Quick start guide they already come with the ND555 head unit, and their pin configuration at the head unit end may* well be unique to the ND555...

No, that would be the Padded Cell "Are we sleep-walking out of Europe?" thread...

This thread reminds me of the film Groundhog Day.

This reminds me of a pathetic joke, so here goes.

Knock, knock.

'Who's there?'

'Dejav'

'Dejav who?'

……..Knock, knock.

Sorry, but it has been a long day.

Apologies to Roger if our silliness gets this moved to the dreaded Padded Cell.

Thanks Chrissu... this brings back memories of the colonscopy I had a few weeks ago.  But how on earth do they get the camera around those tight bends?  ...and what, I'm wondering, does this have to do with ND555 specs?

Ah, I've figured it... the specs are in a white paper?     Hang on, no, they're not in a white paper, they're on the web site. The mystery remains.

PS - my colonoscopy was clear, by the way

I almost hit my gastroenterologist. He was “down there “ when he said ”I’ve got a cute”

He then went on to say I’ve got an acute angle and it would be difficult to get around it.

The ND 555 quick start guide on the naim website in customer support shows what's in the box and this includes 2 burndy leads and a hi-line.

It also shows you need a hi-fi system and illustrates what a hi-fi system looks like in case you did not know.

The power supply is still called a CD555PS power supply even though CD 555 is discontinued. I would have thought it would be renamed.

Ian

Ian, you missed that wonderful, sexy, aluminium cased, straight lined, modernistic remote control... this alone has got to be worth upgrading from whatever streamer you have to the ND555, surely

Posted on: 22 May 2018 by yeti42

You’ll need something to control the pre from it though, that cable doesn’t come in the box. I suspect the app and an narcom 4 will still be the default.

I notice that the ND555 white paper specifies "Requires 555 PS DR power supply"

Does this mean that the ND555 will not work with a Non-DR 555PS ?

Hi,

Correct - the ND555 *REQUIRES* the CD555PS - it cannot be used with an XPS or XP5XS...

Best

Phil

[@mention:1566878603985147], I think the question was would it work with a pre-DR CD555PS, which would be important for people running an NDS (or lower) on a pre-DR PSU.

Sorry - I misread that bit, in that case the information I have is that it can be used on a non-DR 555PS but it (obviously) won't sound as good.

Cheers

Phil

It used to mention the supplied accessories in the spec on the website for the ND555 but this only mentions :-

Zigbee® remote, Power-Line cable (UK denominations only), cleaning cloth, quick start guide

Which itself doesn't seem right as there's no power supply as part of the package. Looks more like something extracted from the Nova product sheet as it also mentions the rotary volume control further up...

I doubt it would be supplied without Burndy cables as the power supply options are limited to one or two 555PS supplies.

Zigbee remote would mean separate remote controls for streamer and preamp and no compatibility with universal and network (at present) remote controls, like Uniti range.  A mistake IMHO.

The new streamers still use system automation, like the old range, so you don’t need a separate remote for preamp control.
