newbie question

With separate streamers, you can use system automation to control volume and input selection via the app. The volume control, especially with sensitive speakers, can be clumsy to the point of unusability in some cases. 

When using one of Naim's Classic pre-amps with system automation connected and activated on the streamer and app, it's basically just sending an up or down command to the motorised volume pot.

And a more techy question - is the protocol for volume up/down released by Naim?  I know that the slider is a pita to use, and i'd happily write an app that sent +1 / -1 volume commands, of the protocol is known.....

With system automation, +/- volume control is the only option. You cannot have a numeric volume as you have with the slider. 

ah ok.  Which app is it, as the Naim one on the iPad has the slider? the N-Serve one?

hmm apparently n-stream, which isn't on the store as far as I can see, or the remotes..... right?

The app ‘knows’ what you are controlling. If it’s a 272 or Uniti you will get the slider. If it’s say an NDX and 282 you will get plus and minus buttons.

When you say N-Stream, is that actually what you are using? It was replaced by the Naim app some time ago. As HH says, this shows the slider for all-in-one streamer/preamps, and the +/- buttons for separates. The remote will control volume in this setup too.

nope I have the Naim app, but not the preamp :-)

n-stream was all I could find referred to online, but I get that the naim app recognises the different systems now.
