Android Naim app cannot find my Naim Mu-so

Posted by: MAB1 on 21 May 2018

The Naim app on my Android phone no longer is able to my 2yr old Naim Mu-so. I am a techo numpty so know very little on how to resolve this other than the usual switching off my Virgin router (latest model)  and resetting my Naim Mu-so. I've done on a number of occasions and have spoken with Naim customer support as well as with Virgin - frustratingly all to no avail. My router is in the upstairs study which is diagonally opposite the downstairs lounge where I have my Mu-so. I have a wifi signals booster plugged into my router and the Mu-so plugged into the corresponding booster along with an Ethernet cable. Streaming music to the Mu-so has been intermittent but nothing like I'm now experiencing. I can connect via blue-tooth but the sound is not what I paid £900 for. Because I cannot get the Naim app to open I cannot even connect by phone via a SUB cable. What am I doing wrong? If I get Virgin to move the router and plug directly into the Mu-so, is this likely to resolve the issue. Friends told me at the time that I should invest in SONAS - I'm starting to regret not to have listened to them. Help and advice, please.

Is the 'signal booster' you refer to an ethernet over mains device? These can cause problems, and if you can use a proper wired Ethernet connection, that may well solve your problem. It may seem like a PITA to run a cable through your house, but it is usually the most reliable option, as well as being very cheap.

As a test, you could buy a long Ethernet cable and just run it loose through the house from router to Muso to see if that solves your problem. (Or move the Muso temporarily to a position near the router.) If you do this, turn the EoM devices off completely, rather than just disconnecting from them, so that they are not radiating RFI all over the place. If this is successful, either instal a cable permanently or get your router moved.

Presumably you have tried "stopping" the app and then restarting it? That often helps the app to forget what it thinks it knows about your muso and start again.

Also you could see whether a friend with an iPhone is willing to visit you, load the Naim IOS app, which is much better at discovery than the Android app, and see whether that can talk to your muso.

Hi MAB1 - sorry to hear that you're having issues with getting the best from your Muso. Given that you've already spoken to Naim support, I suspect that posters here aren't going to have a silver bullet to resolve your problems, but we can offer solutions that have been proven to work for many others.

From what I can see, you probably have two issues - firstly the Android Naim app, and second the way your home network works.

With regard to the Android app, there are known problems with "discovery" of Naim devices on your home network, where this many not be as robust with the Android app as it is with the iOS app. Naim are aware of this issue, and are working to bring a new version of the Android app to users in the near future, to improve the experience of this aspect of its functionality. Bear in mind that there are many flavours of Android out there, working on devices of varying vintages, which is not so much the case with iOS. This new app may help to resolve your problem, though it may be more likely to be an issue with your home network.

Using a Powerline adaptor can seem like a good option to getting Wifi to areas of your house not covered by your router - but as CHRISSU has suggested, these devices are not without their problems. I've used them with some success for many years, but have also found that they can be intermittent - this is in my experience mainly because they are designed to go to sleep in order to save power when they're not actually carrying data, and they don't always "wake up" and get on with the job when they are supposed to. In addition, the Powerline devices themselves are of pretty variable quality, with the top end products being (as you might expect) rather more reliable than a cheaper product which can cost a third of the price. The quality of your mains cabling is also a factor in determining how well the Powerline devices will work.

If your problems are caused by your home network being less than rock solid, do bear in mind that you'd experience similar issues with Sonos or any other similar devices - I've had my fair share of issues with Sonos kit as well!

I'd suggest that you look at two options - as CHRISSU has suggested, running an ethernet cable will provide the best solution, because it will simply work and it's cheap. For many, however, particularly in older properties, running ethernet is not easy. I'd suggest that if this is the case, you look at replacing your power line adaptor/s with a Wifi mesh network, from the likes of Netgear, Linksys, Google and others. The technology used by mesh networks is likely to provide a much more stable Wifi signal than your existing router's Wifi signal, and the investment will be well worth it. BT sell a very good product at relatively modest cost - Google "BT Whole Home Wifi" or read reviews on a well known internet retailer, and you'll find lots of reports from people for whom this has worked wonders.

Good luck, and I hope your issues are resolved soon.
