Synology DSM 6.2
Posted by: Mike-B on 23 May 2018
I see this morning that Synology have a new update called DSM 6.2 in the hopper & will be releasing it to different regions over the next days.
… www Synology Support ... There is a lot going on, the vast majority is business & security & I can't see any obvious issues or anything new with the NAS UPnP audio side. A new user interface is included in DSM 6.2 & a new Media Server software version 1.7.9-2858 is required; this is being released at the same time as DSM 6.2 – I'm not sure if Minimserver is ready to go with this or not. You might want to check it out with simoncn @ Minimserver before it gets either auto-updated to your NAS or you see that its ready to be updated.
Worth noting that this will be the last DSM platform update for older products – this is basically 2013 models & older – they do say that support with vital updates will continue for a further 2 years.
Mike, I've moved this to the Streaming Audio Room, where hopefully it will be of most relevance.
thats were I thought I had it posted ......... thanks Richard
Thanks for the nfo Mike, hopefully it won't be too painful to keep Minimserver going on my olde NAS a bit longer....
I've just had a peep on the Minimserver forum to see if there's any mention of 6.2, nothing that I can find. @simoncn of Minimserver pops up on this forum occasionally, maybe he can give us the lowdown.
FYI - Media Server software version 1.7.9-2858 auto-updated on my machine at 11:00 this morning, I don't see anything different visually or in operation. DSM 6.2 has not arrived yet.
Something strange, Synology released (auto-updated) to DSM 6.1.7-15284 this morning. Per this thread; DSM 6.2 is still in the due for release hopper. Not sure what's going on, I guess all will become clear as & when in time.
I tried manually updating to 6.2 yesterday but it didn't work. I saw the 6.1.7 update appear this morning as an automatic update and applied it. I then retried the manual install of 6.2 which worked fine. So, it looks like 6.1.7 is perhaps a prerequisite before you can apply the 6.2 update. Anyway, all working fine here, including MinimServer.
OK good stuff Adrian, I'm reluctant to load software before Syn run the release, I was bitten once. Good to know Minimserver works OK.
Someone wrote in the minimserver forum: "I've just updated to DSM 6.2 - No problems. Minimserver running fine"

Good stuff Gert, tempted by all this & mindful of a time I was in trouble by jumping the official release gun, I've downloaded 6.2.
All OK, nothing much changed, uninstalled OAuth Service to minimise my installed package count (RAM) Synology's UPnP Media Server didn't load correctly on 1st attempt with my settings missing (blank), X & retry fixed it. CPU & RAM numbers aprx the same when idle & playing music. No changes noted with the Naim iOS app, browsing & art loading speed no different.

Thanks for the feedback, I think this is a job for the weekend and I can now do this with some confidence of success .

Hi Kend, why not set your Synology to run automatic updates for you, its what I normally do & then there is no need to bother keeping a look out for whats new. Its Fit & Forget & it even sends me an email to tell me its done it. https://www.synology.com/en-uk...ter/system_dsmupdate
I was keen to take a look at 6.2 ahead of the regional auto releases this time as apart from having a lot of other stuff included, it included a new user interface & a new Media Server software version 1.7.9-2858 was required (separate update BTW) , & I've seen trouble in that area before. As it happens the only change in the user interface was to add the Thai language - so it was all a bit of a non event.

I have my main music serving NAS set to auto-update, and the other NAS which acts as a music backup and general house NAS to manually update. That way if any bugs trigger in the new DSM I have a working NAS, it hasn't happened yet that I've had a problem with an update, but my very old days as a network operations manager leaves me unhappy with updating the whole estate simultaneously. I tend to remember to update the house NAS about a week later.
Mike, I prefer not to enable automatic updates so that I can review the release notes and check for any immediate issues on the forums before going ahead with an update.
There was a change to the user interface of the Package Manager but it isn't that significant, and the Storage Manager UI has been enhanced and has a lot of useful new functionality.
May I ask, I plan to replace Media server with Minim server on my Synology DS 212J? I have googled Minim server and found a description on how to do it, but it`s not straight forward to me.
Any input appreciated.

Hi Stover, its a long time since I installed it; from what I remember it is reasonably straightforward provided very basic PC stuff doesn't scare you. Its nothing like as super simple as Syn's Media Server with the Install-Open-Stop-Uninstall button & the Media Server GUI menu.
Installing Minimserver from the Syn's Package Centre is the easy part, but it also needs Java installed also included in the Package Centre. You then need MinimWatch installed on your PC/Mac/Laptop - this is the GUI needed to manage MinimServer.
The install instructions ....... http://minimserver.com/install-synology.html ....... are simple enough but do assume you have a bit of PC/IT experience, if you are struggling maybe a lot of reading will make it clearer. But remember if you get it wrong, you won't break anything & its easy to uninstall.

If you happen to be using a Mac to install Java Embedded and MinimServer, only Firefox could download Java in the correct and unlocked form, not Safari, not Chrome, at the time I first tried.
Nick
Nick, the Java is included in the Synology Package Center & it installs on the Synology, just be sure its the latest Synology DSM revision such as 6.1.6 or 6.2 otherwise you will need to go hunting around www Java.

Mike,
Downloading Java Embedded from the Oracle “Support” site was the path I pursued — I do not recall any alternatives suggested at the time. Like a lot of us who pursue this hobby, the fact that it took me 90-180 days (I cannot recall exactly) to figure out the Firefox thing was all part of the fun, as I applied the time I had to the task.
I hope anybody who ventures down that particular avenue is spared some agravation.
Nick
Thanks a lot Mike/ Nick. I will try further when coming home. As far as I remember, Minim listed the disk versions needing Java download and that mine did not.
This is my last attempt to make NAS being my music server, before Core purchase and my first thought is that Core`s for me. I`m not a Mac dummy, but an expert either. Need to spend some more time on this before I give up though.

I used this when I originally set up Java & Minim, maybe i will help some folks....
Installing Java in DSM 6 is much easier than the manual installation process originally required. As Mike says, there is an official Synology package in the Package Manager that allows you to install Java 8 from the UI in a couple of clicks. You then install MinimServer in the same way.
You should follow the (updated) official install instructions. Because for ARM an important change was done:
"f your Synology NAS has an ARMv7, ARMv8 or ARMv5 processor, you don't need to install Java [NEW] because the MinimServer package includes a tailored version of the OpenJDK Java Runtime Environment (identified as MinimJRE) that is suitable for running MinimServer."

This is great news, Gert.
Mine is a 413J with the Arm5 processor. The manual method is so unintuitive that I have to follow my notes each time, not that it is all that complex.
Nick
Apologies, Nick, I missed the fact you have an ARM CPU. It's a lot simpler with an Intel NAS!
