Synology DSM 6.2

Posted by: Mike-B on 23 May 2018

I see this morning that Synology have a new update called DSM 6.2 in the hopper & will be releasing it to different regions over the next days.

… www Synology Support ...     There is a lot going on, the vast majority is business & security & I can't see any obvious issues or anything new with the NAS UPnP audio side.   A new user interface is included in DSM 6.2 & a new Media Server software version 1.7.9-2858 is required;  this is being released at the same time as DSM 6.2    – I'm not sure if Minimserver is ready to go with this or not.   You might want to check it out with simoncn @ Minimserver before it gets either auto-updated to your NAS or you see that its ready to be updated.

Worth noting that this will be the last DSM platform update for older products – this is basically 2013 models & older – they do say that support with vital updates will continue for a further 2 years.

It's a hell of a lot simpler with Synology's own Media Server - & that includes all NAS makes & alternative server software.

It has some downsides,  album art is not as fast as others & it doesn't transcode gapless correctly.     But I made a decision to go with WAV & find I prefer browsing by folder view most all the time,  so am I bovver'd ??

That said would really like to see Synology & Asset get into an official support agreement.

Thanks for the feedback, I think this is a job for the weekend and I can now do this with some confidence of success .

Hi Kend,  why not set your Synology to run automatic updates for you,  its what I normally do & then there is no need to bother keeping a look out for whats new.  Its Fit & Forget & it even sends me an email to tell me its done it.   https://www.synology.com/en-uk...ter/system_dsmupdate

I was keen to take a look at 6.2 ahead of the regional auto releases this time as apart from having a lot of other stuff included,  it included a new user interface & a new Media Server software version 1.7.9-2858 was required (separate update BTW) ,  & I've seen trouble in that area before.   As it happens the only change in the user interface was to add the Thai language - so it was all a bit of a non event.

Mike, Thanks for the info on auto updates, I have only had the DS since December and am still on a learning curve of all of the features.

I run Synology’s own DiskStation at the same time as MinimServer.  DiskStation is my backup for when MinimServer is occasionally offline due to an upgrade issue.  DiskStation is reliable; MinimServer is better when it is up — I had forgotten exactly why.  Gapless support and on-the-fly conversion of AIFF to WAV do seem to come to mind, but I have not tested DiskStation for a long time — Minim being steady lately.

One important advantage of minimserver for me is that it displays covers for an album directory when browsing in folder view. The Synology Media server does not do this.

You also can store a folder.jpg in an artists folder so you have a cover art for this, too.

Couple of things:   Nick,  I assume you mean Synology Media Server & not DiskStation,  DiskStation is the  web-based operating system & GUI for the whole Synology OS.

Gert,  Synology folder view is just what it says, you view a folder,  the album art is seen when you open the album name folder.   You can browse view the album cover art in other browsing views,  such as view by Album

Quite right, Mike.  DiskStation is the icon I see in the Naim app, but that is provided by the server app you name.

...    ???    errr ...  not on my Naim iOS app Nick.   I use Syn's native Media Server & this is the UPnP link between NAS & streamer & is what the app opens.   Minimserver is media server & matains the same UPnP view & control link as Syn's Media Server.   Nothing in the app connects to DiskStation as such.   All the DiskStation interface stuff is via a web based GUI on your PC or Mac & is used to facilitate all the various Synology programs.

Right again Mike.  The icon image says “Synology”. The text name is the name I gave my server, which is “DiskStation”, imaginitvely.

OK Nick,  no probs.   Like you my Synology icon carries the Synology word,  but I renamed the Naim assigned "UPnP" icon into "NAS".

DSM 6.2 installed today on my DS413J today.  New UI is nicer.  No issues with MinimServer, but I did also need to update Java Embedded 8 using the usual method for ARM5 processors.
