Nova going back

Posted by: xcentric on 24 May 2018

Liked the Nova when I first heard it.  Bought one on 14 day trial.  But as well as it having album artwork stuck on the display (despite the latest firmware) it's got worse the last few days.  Harsher, thinner treble, weaker bass.  Replacing it with a 272/250dr I hope.  But disappointing as the product design is much nicer and more modern.

Odd that the sound went from good-better (after a couple of days) but then progressively worse.....

I got my Nova 4 months ago and I haven't had any problems with it and it sounds great.

Maybe you got a bad one ?

Artwork issue should be sorted mid June, the units do go through a weird sound changing phase as they run in so it’s nothing unusual, maybe they could extend your trial for a bit before you finally decide to chop it in

Sound with new Naim devices (and some others) is rollercoaster, ie getting good and worse in waves over a few months...

it would be strange if it simply got better... that wouldn’t really make much sense.

I concur with Mercky's response above. Both the software sorting and break-in time are valid reasons to ask the dealer for an extension on your trial period. That will help you be certain you want to move on to replacement gear.

Shame, but totally sympathize, my first Nova was RMA, 2nd had the issues you mention, but it sounds great from the get-go and just got better.

I must admit i was seriously considering returning with the 14 day, but did not.

Looking back and the ongoing issues, i am still torn, i do enjoy the Nova, but the constant issues i do not.

My Star was great for a week, lost the bass for about a week, lost mid-range for like 3 days, got bright while the mid-range was gone thought I made a bad choice.... so one Thursday night I powered down the unit, unplugged waited 5 mins plugged it back in, powered it on, gave it a couple hours to warm up, everything snapped into place.... has sounded amazing ever since.

ditto with my Atom more or less except it went on longer, just goes to show the volatility of these units and no wonder there's issues around firmware updates, my Atom sounds lovely now though

I have to say I have never been sure that electronics can change in sound like this so drastically, i'm not saying it doesn't happen, but I do question whether it is quite as exaggerated as described above, and i'm convinced that a lot of it is down to the imagination of the listener.  In my experience a well warmed up system does seem to sound better, however, I have never found any Naim system new or old to sound 'bad' or 'thin' or 'lacking any element of the sound i.e. mid / bass / treble etc.  Maybe I just have cloth ears, but as they say, ignorance is bliss!

If you think that’s preposterous, you should see how people think different brands and gaugues of 99.9% OFC somehow sound different! Talk about imagination of the listener!!

Surely it's all the 9s after  the first decimal place that make the difference ?

Please don't tell me I paid £3,000+ for a metre of Chord Music for nothing?
