Is this a home demo or a purchase, pray tell?

Purchase

Posted on: 26 May 2018 by nigelb

Looking forward to  your thoughts. When I replaced an unusual XPS with a 555DR on my NDS, night turned to day and there was a sound of jaws dropping on the floor. Well not quite but a pretty significant uplift.

I did the same last week, replaced my XPSDR with a 555DR and I still struggle to put words to what it did to my system. Musical presence?

Congratulations!

Hi Strat, DR or not DR?

I am wondering whether to DR mine on the CDS3 but haven't been able to audition a CDS3 with 555PSDR yet.

Best regards, FT

p.s. I hope listening to mine didn't corrupt you into spending even more money on CD replay

Did the same after Christmas with my nDAC. Had it on demo a few months, but there was no chance it was going back. A £3k trade up! Doing the same with 282 -> 252 just added to the jaw dropping experience. Was tempted by the 552, but adding Naim isolation glass shelves, cups, balls and longer legs took me to a very nice place indeed!

Thursday

Posted on: 26 May 2018 by rjstaines

So by Sunday, which is always a good day to talk to your god, you'll be asking the god of music why he (or she) didn't lead you to purchase this top-of-the-range power supply before now. And a week further on, you'll be crying in your [drink-of-choice] tears of pure joy.

OK, a little over the top, perhaps, but you'll certainly be pleased with what you hear, that's for sure.

Don't think you will get more than one-word answers out of Lindsay until Thursday.

i had an xps2 before the 555dr on my nds.   With the 7k difference between them, i could have bought 7 k power cords for my pre, xps2, and 300ps.  I think money would be better invested and the upgrade bigger on the whole system.  Xps2/nds/ 3 chord music power cords vs 555dr/ nds....  quite sure the former would be better.

FR, why don't you downgrade from 555DR to XPSDR and put the saving towards the Chord Music power leads if this will give you a bigger upgrade? You might get enough cash back to buy half a Chord Music power lead, but I guess you could keep saving.

I will admit here and now, I have not, repeat not, heard what Chord Music power cables do to Naim amps. What I do know is they start at £5000 each! I have also heard what a 555DR did on my NDS and that was special. Trading in my XPS against pre loved 555DR cost me way less than one Chord Music power lead. Pretty decent value don't you think?

You might want to check your maths if you are really referring to the Chord Music power leads.

When it comes to power leads I really don't 'get it'.

Fine, a decent cable and decent plugs are a must, but for me 'decent' stops at the Powerline Lite at £99 or thereabouts.  Just what, exactly, a £5,000 power lead can do for me beats the s h 1 t  outa me.

The above statement, true as it may be, proves how hypocritical I really am... I have six (I think) full-fat Powerlines at £500 a throw in my system.  My excuse is that when I bought the Powerlines at £500 (ish), the 'lite' version wasn't available; the alternative being the power cables supplied with the kit.   Since then, I've gone active with the ATC's and they are run with Powerline Lites... good as Chord Music cables are, the power version isn't going to enhance performance by a whole 60%  (adding £10,000 of power cables to a £17k speaker)... of this I am sure.

And just to demonstrate that I don't walk around with a sand bucket to bury my 'cables' head in, I will admit to having one Music interconnect between NDS & 552.  Signal cables, fine, they work... power chords, surely not.

the chord power music are 5k?  my god, i thought they were more 2k.  I was just trying to tell that today, perhaps i would not have bought the 555dr first.  The differences vs the xps2 are real, but not night and day.   Selling the 555dr is loose money, because it can’t be sold at the same price but with 25% decrease.

I am not saying also that buying a 555dr is a bad choice....but today i would have first upgraded something else, like all power cords, for this big amount of money.

Yes, understood. But I am fundamentally disagreeing in that I would always upgrade the power supply before the power cables. Just my opinion. Although you are having second thoughts, you definitely did the right thing in going for the 555DR first IMHO.

i checked, the music power cable is 5k. so it would be more sarum t.....

Posted on: 26 May 2018 by Consciousmess

Do they charge 5k for a power lead because those that buy it are rich? And to ‘them’, £5k is nothing. So the target market is kind of esoteric and their consumer base remains consistent this being so??

Please elucidate!

For 3 Chord Music power cables you could get yourself a ND555 and go on a nice holiday!

Black boxes first, once you have these right, then go for cables.

In the best of all worlds power cables should not make a difference, and wildely expensive power cables should not even be considered. Unfortunately I have found and paid for one of the Anzus cables running  from my wall socket to my Anzus Mainz block. This cable was upgraded from a powerline cable. Anzus makes super expensive cables, and I was lucky enough to get aa very good price for this cable, but it was still the double of the price of a powerline. But it was clear from the start that this superexpensive cable made a difference. The problem is how  much money you have to pay for that upgrade. I admit I would not have paid the regular price, I would not even have tried it out!
