Unitiserve/SSD wont rip

As a workaround, you can certainly rip on a computer and save to the downloads folder or a music share. Just remember that you will also need to edit any metadata on your computer as you won’t be able to do that with the Naim software. 

....by the way, on the very rare occasions when my US has been unable to rip a CD, I have found iTunes to be the best ripper for dealing with difficult CDs. I wouldn’t use it otherwise, but it does seem to cope with any CD you throw at it.

I had problems ripping "some" CDs on my HDX.  It was the optical drive giving up the ghost.  Replaced under warranty.

OK, ripped a CD using dBpoweramp and simply copied it to the artist folder on the ReadyNAS Duo. Powercycled NAS, UnitiServe and NDS. However I suspect there is something missing as the new album was not recognised -- i.e. did not appear in the music collection either via Naim app on iPad or browsing directly on NDS.

When I compare my dBpoweramp rip with existing rips on the NAS, I can see some files missing.

amginfo.xml (I don't believe this matters as it depends where you get this info from while ripping)

AMGReport.txt (ditto...)

cddbinfo.txt (I believe this matters -- but I cannot figure out how to get it generated and included in the dBpoweramp rip -- mind you my dBpoweramp is a trial, so perhaps I need the fully paid-up version???)

Both my dBpoweramp and the Unitiserve rips have the folder.JPG file with the album art -- so this is OK.

so the issue could be with cdddbinfo.txt -- grateful if someone could tell me how to get that included or how to generate it.

I must admit, from the limited initial acquaintance, I quite like dBpoweramp --it 'feels' right --- so I its likely i will actually pay for a copy and get into it more...

Ken, when you say you copied the CD rip to the artist folder, where exactly is that? The Unitiserve requires you to put CDs it rips into one folder, and all other music (ripped on a computer or downloaded) in a separate folder. If you are not doing this, it could be the cause of your problem. (If you already know this, just ignore me!)

I copied the CD rip straight to my Media\MQ folder on my ReadyNAS Duo. Perhaps that's the mistake -- should I have copied it to the Unitiserve instead?

Ken, the MQ folder is the one that is specifically for CDs ripped on the Unitiserve. You should never add to, or alter this folder using a computer, only via a Naim interface, so I suspect that is your problem. You need to set up a ‘network share’ on your NAS for these files. 

When you browse your music on the Naim app, you see all your music as a single, integrated library, but they need to be stored in the correct folder. 

Ken, our posts crossed. My US is the HDD version, which is a little different. I don’t think yours has a Downloads folder like the HDD version, but you need a folder known as a network share on your NAS for storing the non-Naim rips. This is described in the SSD version of the manual. 

If this all gets too much, give Naim a call and talk to Phil Harris - he will be able to get you sorted.

You NAS MUST contain two folders for the UnitiServe SSD to operate well.

RIP folder and DOWNLOAD folder.

RIP folder is a designated STORE folder. This is where CDs are ripped. You MUST not under any circumstances mess with the folder steucture there.

DOWLOAD folder - this is where you paste music you have bought on-line or ripped yourself using a DB Poweramp. It must have a SHARE status assigned to it/

One worrying thing I saw - you cannot have folders with artists, composers etc. Metadata on files is used for the sorting purposes....

If you need detailed insteuctions, please email me and I will walk you though the setup.

after reading the various bits of documentation here and there and also exercising the somewhat clunky 'Display Interface' application, I found it to be a LOT simpler than I feared.

all I needed to do was to create an extra share on the NAS drive and make sure this share was 'enabled' in the Naim 'Display Interface' application. Then I added a folder -- which I could call anything I like -- I just called it 'MyMusic' and copied the dBpoweramp rips to it.

I found I could 'browse' to that new share and 'see' all the albums I had just copied into 'MyMusic' within the new share.

The best bit is that I could also 'see' and play the new music on my NDS. Job done -- that's is all I wanted to achieve really for what I think should be those rare occasions when the Unitiserve fails to rip. Good news is that I have managed to rip all the CDs bought recently that my Unitiserve simply could not handle, for whatever reason...

Thanks John. I panicked a bit when I saw the Unitiserve was powered off this morning … now what?

But I switched it back on and all is ok and playing the NDS (4.4) right now and it sounds as good/fab as when you were last here John.

I must have switched it off by mistake when I was faffing around trying to connect a keyboard, mouse and VGA screen to the Unitiserve -- only to discover afterwards that I needn't have bothered as I could have accessed the 'Display Interface' by browsing to it from my work PC! Grrrrr… RTFM, as they say...
