ND555 Roadshows

Posted by: ChrisH on 04 June 2018

Just saw this on the Naim Facebook page - 22 ND555 Roadshow evenings in UK between June and November.

Its not yet on the website/Connection section yet, Im sure it soon will be, as will other Roadshows elsewhere.

Only 19 are showing so far, Im just hoping there will be one at my local dealer in the 3 remaining to be announced - getting elsewhere to a dealer for a 6.30pm kick off on a Thursday is not so easy on a working day!

Something to look forward to anyway.

Delicious double standards irony! Nice to meet defenders of free speech.

Double stdards?  Now - that’s insulting. How dare you?

What gves you a right to come onto the forum and accuse me of double standards?

Who knows ... but I think Timmo 1341 has a very good good point. By the way, what does SWMBO mean?

Anger methinks.

Timmo has decided to make personal comments, and in effect police the thread and forum members.

Adam has objected.

Timmo is claiming victim-hood and that his free speech is being attacked.

Can we get back to the HiFi please.

1. Members making comments on public forum invites expression of opinion, be they complimentary or critical.

2. Your response to my opinions smacks of censorious sanctimony (hence double standards).

3. I have just as much right to ‘come onto the forum’ and express an opinion as you, albeit there are a few who seem to think it’s their own private members club.

Now climb down off your high horse and chill.

Whilst I can agree to your points 1-3 your last comment is just plain rude.

I’m not your friend, not your brother so don’t patronise me with your comments.

Of course Let’s do.

People just need to book a demo and judge for themselves. My comments about being harsh was a direct comparison with the same music being played on the same system and to my ears in patches it sounded harsh. The NDS is still a wonderful player but the game has moved  on.

ND555, Uniti Core and new Fraim, wow, I bet Billy Vee's are glad they did the demo now!

Enjoy.

Thanks Sloop John,

As you’ll see from my profile ‘story’ I nearly bought a Core in January 2017 when they first came out, however cancelled my order when I became aware of the early teething problems with the product.  The product now is much improved (especially with the imminent FLAC transcode firmware update), and a worthy replacement for my US-SSD.  It’s also a supported product (unlike my US), and was used to develop the ND555 (so a natural partner).

I’ve also procrastinated on the change of Fraimlite to Fraim for a couple of years now, and with the ND555 coming, seems appropriate to make the change now.

The ND555 was an obvious purchase (for me) having heard just how good it is.

So in a way, it’s only the ND555 that’s new to the upgrade ‘roadmap’!

Having said all that, the financial and trade-in deal Billy Vee offered was fantastic and helped soften the blow considerably!

Looking forward to the arrival of the new pieces, and will feed back more when it’s all plumbed in.

It's an acronym used to describe - She Who Must Be Obeyed. Not necessarily a spouse, strictly speaking.

I don’t obey my wife on everything ( I would be using my boombox with my iPhone for music then ) but a 20k streamer can trigger trade wars....

not good

That made me laugh ! And I know it is true for many , as many wives do not understand the audiophile hobby . I remember when my brother recently got a Rega planar 6 , his wife folded her arms and stared at him as he brought it into the house and said when will this ever end !  And of course the answer is,....it never really does .... but many wives feel you should not buy stereo gear ... and any upgrades are very very unnecessary.  But really if you are into this hobby ... improving the sound of  your system is just in the bloodstream.

One thing I am curious is the Tidal playback, I wonder will it be better than old line, closer to Nas, I am also looking forward to use Roon.....

I would like to reassure you all that my wife is fully appraised of my intention to purchase, and the true cost of an ND555. I also hope that Naim are busy in the factory, building with carefull dedication a nice large initial batch, so dealer demo and early customer demand can be met ASAP.

Don,t write off the NDX2 , for some it may have that musical boogie factor...like some of the CD players. I need to hear both back to back in the same system with my music.

How much do the ND555’s 5 cost and what do you need with it, other than the source and speakers? How would it compare to the Nova?

Fascinating, as Spock would say.

The NDX2 is £5k, the ND555 is £20k inc power supply, £13k without. But compared to Nova you will need a preamp. In my case I have demoed 282 and 252, I decided on the latter that needs a supercap. That’s an outlay of perhaps £30 k....so the demo between NDx2 with the same 555psis important from a sound and cost point of view. I have heard both, but notin the right setting or with my music.

Quite a step up in investment then. A leap of faith, Spock may say?

See what we can learn? And at no additional cost.

Happily for both of us, Helen and I are lifelong music lovers who would rather spend spare money on music and its reproduction at the highest attainable level within budget, than a hundred other equally frivolous things we could think of.

It's interesting. What we like overlaps but also varies hugely at the edges. We listen to different things and listen for different things. Certain aspects of the composition, arrangement, performance and production are very important to one of us and so unimportant as to be disregarded to the other, and vice versa. Yet despite our many differences, and for the most part hearing and taking away different things from the same recording, we both converge back to our love of music and it's quality reproduction. And although we look for different strengths in what a HiFi system can do, we both love our present system because it fulfils our needs.

We'll be listening to the ND555 together, when it either hits our dealer or lands on our Fraim. And we'll likely have similar opinions of its quality and abilities - for different reasons.

I think I’ll work on the basis that if you need to ask the price, you can’t afford it. I’ll have malt with Bones instead.

Enjoyed the demo of the ND555 vs NDS on Saturday 7th July at Billy Vee with Jason from Naim.  Fully understand the comments on this thread now about how much better sound quality the ND555 offers over the NDS.  Variety of music from Pat Metheny track (needledrop transferred to CD then ripped to Core), some classical (Bach?) and some female solo artists (not sure who) before we got a turn to play some music of our own (Emili Sande - Heaven, and some Daft Punk (Overture from Tron)).

Rest of the system was exactly the same as mine in my profile, except fed by a Uniti Core, and sited on Full Fraim.

Compared to NDS, the ND555 had more composure in the bass (less ‘bloat’j, seemed to have a cleaner top end, better imaging and resolution of the multiple guitars on the Pat Metheny track.  The music sounded more visceral (alive) and generally offered all round general improvement in quality.

Jason confirmed that the demo unit was a final production unit, and was not a pre-production prototype.

I’ve placed my order for a ND555 (expected delivery end of August) with part-ex on my NDS. I’ve also ordered a Uniti Core (to replace my UnitiServe-SSD), and full Fraim to replace my Fraimlite (as the ND555 really does deserve the best platform).

All in all, a very enjoyable day!  I highly recommend an audition of the ND555 if you get the chance - a great bit of kit.

George, have they quoted you for the NDS for part exchange? Are you trading it without a power supply?

I already have two 555 PSUs powering my NDS (see my profile), and the ND555 comes with its own (different) unique burndies, so trading in my NDS with existing burndies, but keeping my 555PSUs.

ND555 can be powered by one or two 555PSUs, but not with any other PSU.
