Apple AE digital signal blocked
Posted by: RikkieB on 05 June 2018
Hi,
I have an Apple AE connected through an Toslink cable from the digital output of the AE to an optical input on my n272, no sound and the message "digital signal blocked" in the Naim app. What am I missing, it could swear it worked in the past. Any help is greatly appreciated. thx!
AE is configured in client mode, so only joining the network. Connected via WiFi. The goal is to use airplay through the AE.

Not sure if thus will solve your problem, but I have always configured my AE to ‘extend’ rather than ‘join’ a network. Never had a problem with one playing via optical.
Joining a network is more efficient and better performance than extending a WLAN wirelessly. However it looks like the connectivity is working. I guess a call to Naim to ask what that error message actually means... it sounds like the SPDIF s being inhibited in some way... the only flag I can think off in the SPDIF protocol is copy inhibit, but that shouldn’t stop playout in my opinion. Does the status say the streamer is locked to the digital signal? How does the status change when you disconnect the Toslink?
When they have no signal coming in, some optical S/Pdif devices still generate a valid S/Pdif data stream, but with no playable audio data (i.e. just a constant middle value). In this case the streamer will display "Digital Signal Locked" below the name of the input (because the clock can be recovered from the signal), but there'll be no sound as there's nothing encoded in the digital signal. I suspect this may be what's happening.
You can test this by connecting to the analogue output of the AE. If this is the case then you need to investigate why the audio signal isn't being sent to the AE across the network (if so it's likely that you've not got something configured quite right to use the AE as the network endpoint for the audio stream).

Hi,
Ok, it works, don't know what is different now, maybe changing the AE to extend the network and back to joining the network did the trick. So basically 2 reboots. I have sound but still I see in the Naim app "Digital Signal Blocked". If I disconnect the Toslink, I get the message "Not connected"
Are you absolutely sure it says "Digital Signal Blocked" rather than "Digital Signal Locked"?
Mine says "Digital Signal Locked" when it locks onto a valid optical signal.

I was looking for configuration settings, but there are not that many for the AE, of course airplay is enabled. As said it works now, but still the message "Digital Signal Blocked"

Wait, I will check, it is now in Dutch "Digitaal signaal geblokkeerd" = Digital signal blocked and I do have music. Changing the language into English on the iPad gives in the Naim app "Digital signal locked". A case of wrong translation ????. I will e-mail Naim about this!
Thx for helping me out everyone
Yes, that would be very confusing! I fully understand.
At least it's working now, enjoy the music!
