Thanks-and more Unitiserve issues

Posted by: stebro on 05 June 2018

I updated my Unitiserve to firmware 1.7b thanks to help on this forum.  I have two more questions:

For several years, the desktop client freezes every 3 or 4 weeks.  Trying to look at the music library, for example,  just doesn’t work.  I click on the + sign and nothing happens.  I was advised by Naim to open Regedit and delete a file called “musiclibrarysplit”. It works and functionality is restored until it happens agan in a few weeks.. I’m wondering if others have this problem and if it’s fixed by the new firmware.

Secondly, when I rip a disc-most of which are classical-it’s not showing up on my ipad Naim app under composer or in other places it should be. I see the diac under “latest” and under albums so I know it’s there.  For example, I just ripped four discs of Prokofiev symphonies but I checked under composers>Prokofiev, and composers>Serge Prokofiev and they don’t appear.  Same thing with several Sibelius discs I ripped. Is there a way to fix this or to edit the disc so it will be listed properly?   Pretty hard to locate and play something when this happens.  Thanks.

Sounds like you need to edit the metadata to add the composer if this is missing from the info added to the rip. The Naim servers only have a limited range of editing options available, which can make it a bit harder to arrange things in a way that suits you, but this is very easy to do on the N-Serve app on your iPad.

Can’t help you with the DTC, as a Mac user I just use N-Serve. You also have the option of using the browser interface by entering the IP address into a web browser window.

I would advise checking each ripped CD’s metadata. Especially on classical music. And adopt one system.

It’s nothing to do with the UnitiServe as such. More with the reference databases available on the net and how automatic metadata appending works (it’s actually quite amazing it does work at all )>

I haven't heard before of the DTC error you mention so I suspect that it is either very unusual or has been fixed with the DTC distributed in 1.7b

As Chris says, if you have an iPad then metadata editing is easy with n-serve on the iPad. (That's n-serve and not the Naim app).

you can change the metadata on unitserve with the desktop client, on pc or mac.  I have done it recently and it works.

You used the DTC on a Mac? Do you mean N-Serve?

You can do this on PC or Mac but it is easier if you have an iPad, like Stebro does, to use the n-serve app on the iPad.

I don't know why that should be because it always worked fine for me usually no n-serve in an iPad.

I’ve been trying to edit  the metadata so that my newly ripped Prokofiev and Sibelius discs show up under “composers”.  I added the composers’ names to the disc title but that didn’t help. Some of the discs have a field for composer but they still aren’t showing up under “composers”.  Other discs have no such field.  I have ripped hundreds of discs and many do appear in the correct places under composer, performer, artist, etc.  I can’t figure out why some do not and how to fix this.  Am I missing some editing function?  Is there a way to add another field like composer to a disc which is lacking that field?  Why would some discs which do have a composer field not show up under the composer’s name?

One must remember how the metadata is looked up. Generally, all there is available is an approximation.

What the UnitiServe does, once the files are ripped it compares the lenght of the tracks (individual plus of the album) and their number to a reference database. It has no other markers to go by. Because CDs rarely have any.

Classical music does not have a set tempo (measured in beats-per-minute) like the modern music does. So the same pieces will vary in lenght.

With the above in mind.... looking up metadata for CDs is not that easy. And the quality of the data on your UnitiServe is only as good as the data in reference databases.

Hope the above helps a bit...

Thanks Adam. If I understand you correctly, there is no fix for the problem I described (ripped discs not showing up under composer, conductor or other categories on the Naim Ipad app).  Just making sure it’s something  I’ll have to live with.

There is always a way. You can edit the entire metadata.

Do you have an iPad?

I do have an ipad and use it regularly to edit the metadata—change the album cover, title, performer, etc.  But I’m stumped at how to fix the problem I’ve described where an album doesn’t show up under composers even though the composer’s name is in the album title and in some cases in the composer field (in other cases there is no composer field for some albums).  Would really appreciate any instructions.

Ok - I will prepare something for you - off to work now, so please give me some time.

One thing to understand - what you see on the screen does not equal the metadata. Fields like album, artist, title mean nothing to a server. All UPnP servers use underlying info, burried in the files.

Just to illustrate: your file could be called ‘Sibelius’ and this is what you’d see on your computer screen. But if the metadata was ‘Guns’N’Roses’ your track would show up in your Guns’N’Roses collection
That’s the principle of a reference databse functionality.

Please don’t spend too much time or go to a lot of triouble.  I appreciate your help but don’t want to impose.

The composer must be in the composer field to be viewable in the app, not just the title. You should be able to add a composer field if there isn’t one after the online lookup. Also, the edits can sometimes be a bit slow to show up in the app, so try leaving it for a while before opening and playing it. Also if you go to settings in the N-Serve app and hit Refresh Cache it can help. Likewise in the Naim app, refreshing the UPnP cache can prompt it to show any updates.

i use desktop client for unitserve with my pc.  Is is better or different vs using the n-serve app?

i tried the n serve app one day but couldn’t change any cover album....

Posted on: 07 June 2018 by David Hendon

I think the n-serve app is as good for metadata editing as the DTC, but it's easier to understand how to use it. The DTC feels a bit last century to me.

There shouldn't be any problem to change the cover art using the n-serve app, so I don't know why you had a problem. The changes don't always show up immediately, but in a few minutes it should all be there.

On my Unitiserve, adding cover art has become a problem recently.  I use both n-serve and DTC and previously didnt have any problem adding cover art.  Now, the rips almost never have any cover art and I have to add it manually.  I've found that adding the cover art through n-serve doesnt work anymore.  I now use DTC but even then it often takes me many tries and over 15 minutes to add the cover art for a single album.

Are you still on firmware 1.7a? The main metadata provider stopped so you need 1.7b to sort that out. You can check the firmware version in the DTC or n-Serve app.

I'm on 1.7b.

Posted on: 08 June 2018 by David Hendon

Well since US and 1.7b hasn't changed recently, nor has n-serve, we are either looking an issue between n-serve and whatever you are running it on (IOS or Mac) or your network has some strange issue. So first thing is restart your router, even if it seems to work for everything else. Also try ripping a CD that worked in the past...

Given the recent spate of people posting about Unitiserve metadata lookup failures, I can't help thinking that one or more of the online databases has issues. It can't be coincidence that these posts have suddenly started appearing.
