Thanks-and more Unitiserve issues

Posted by: stebro on 05 June 2018

I updated my Unitiserve to firmware 1.7b thanks to help on this forum.  I have two more questions:

For several years, the desktop client freezes every 3 or 4 weeks.  Trying to look at the music library, for example,  just doesn’t work.  I click on the + sign and nothing happens.  I was advised by Naim to open Regedit and delete a file called “musiclibrarysplit”. It works and functionality is restored until it happens agan in a few weeks.. I’m wondering if others have this problem and if it’s fixed by the new firmware.

Secondly, when I rip a disc-most of which are classical-it’s not showing up on my ipad Naim app under composer or in other places it should be. I see the diac under “latest” and under albums so I know it’s there.  For example, I just ripped four discs of Prokofiev symphonies but I checked under composers>Prokofiev, and composers>Serge Prokofiev and they don’t appear.  Same thing with several Sibelius discs I ripped. Is there a way to fix this or to edit the disc so it will be listed properly?   Pretty hard to locate and play something when this happens.  Thanks.

AMG has shut down and MusicBrainz isn't as good.....

Yes, but that was ages ago, and there has been a spate of reports of lookup failures just in the last few weeks, so I am speculating that another issue is at play here. Possibly an issue with the online lookup services, as the US firmware is unchanged.

A couple of the recent reports have turned out to be the US wasn't on the 1.7b firmware but I agree it does sound as if something else is going on. Maybe the protocol for looking up in MusicBrainz has changed subtlely, or AMG isn't there at all instead of sending a no results response and the US waits around hopefully. Maybe we should raise in the beta forum, where Naim devs are more likely to see it.

Good idea David. I have had some meadata-lookup issues too.

Will you send a cross-link to the Beta forum?

I think a separate explanatory post in a new thread is more likely to get read. I'll do it later. You could then join in and say you've seen the problem too or whatever....

Ok I have posted in the beta group now.

I had thought of doing the same, David. There is a wider issue here of how well Naim will be able to support discontinued products, now that there is a whole range of ‘legacy’ servers and streamers. Their long term support for analogue products is, of course, legendary, but maintaining this with digital sources might prove more difficult.

Yes I agree Chris. I think a change to delete AMG from the list of metadata providers shouldn't be too difficult but how long will they have people who understand the legacy server firmware, as I suspect the present firmware isn't going to be that well documented that someone can pick it up and tweak it quickly?

Thanks Dave - I saw the post and added to it.

Good luck with getting a response from Naim. .  Meanwhile I’ve noticed that most of the CDs I’ve ripped recently have no field for composer.  Once they’re ripped they pretty much disappear (unless you can remember every artist who performed a given piece).  Seems absurd. There is a field for the liner notes author but not the composer.  Someone wrote that there’s a way to add a missing field.  I haven’t been able to figure this out so if anyone has the patience to post step by step instructions I would be very grateful.

you can change the metadata on unitserve with the desktop client, on pc or mac.  I have done it recently and it works.

You can do this on PC or Mac but it is easier if you have an iPad, like Stebro does, to use the n-serve app on the iPad.

i tried to change the cover arts using the n serve app, but i didn’t succeeded.

I find cover art changes with nserve can sometimes be a bit hit & miss.  Patience has always been rewarded though, even if it's taken a few times to get the new artwork accepted.  It can be a matter of "if at first you don't succeed, try, try again" (and again and again).  It's all a matter of how long you keep your finger on the new artwork that you've selected on your ipad

Having said that, the other fifty percent of times it works fine straight away.

As far as chaning cover art from the desktop app, I've never got this to work, but then I've only ever tried it once or twice.

I understand it is possible but can someone please post step by step directions on how to add a field for composer using an iPad (or a PC)?   Thank you very much in advance!

I thought I'd throw in my twopence worth here David...

Having been responsible for software (firmware) development for much longer than is considered polite by most people,  one of the things I used to bang on about relentlesly to the guys and girls who worked for me in software development was the fact that some day, some poor sod is going to have to come along and modify your code, so be nice to them  (...think - it might even be you)  and document, in detail, and even more detail, what's going on in your code.

As a consequence, the software that was developed was maintainable (not always easily, of course) for many many years after its original creation.

I'd like to think that Naim software development teams have the same ethos

...but you might be right.
