Uniti Firmware

Posted by: Anavrin on 06 June 2018

just a quick one, I got my Star yesterday, and obviously had a play with it before the firmware update it was trying to make me do as soon as it come out the box.

I recall the original firmware was 2.4 and the release was “release nova”

after the firmware update it’s 2.6 and “release star”

odd that it’s release out the box said nova!

is this a bug in firmware 2.4 or is it possible that my Star had nova firmware originally installed.

another thing I noticed is on the original firmware, when selecting USB I was able to browse the rear connected USB drive, now I can’t, it’s show nothing on USB, but when I select Server it shows the ripped CD’s on my rear connected drive, this may well be normal the more I think about it.

the odd thing is, I think it may have sounded better with the 2.4 release nova!

the conspiracy theorist in me thinks it’s original firmware, did sound better and deliberately so for demo purposes!!

shame if it did but it’s too late now, unless you can roll back.

There has been quite a bit of controversy about whether the Unitis sound better with 2.6 or 2.4 firmware. If you want to roll back, it is possible but not recommended by Naim. You would have to call the support line and they will tell you how to do it. This information hasn't been made public so that they can keep track of how many users are choosing to roll back. Or you could wait and see whether the next firmware update resolves the controversy, which is what I expect to happen.

The one thing that you can be sure about is that there isn't a different firmware for demo purposes thing going on here!

The Star and Nova firmware will have lots of commonality, but I suspect it was a bug that it reported Nova firmware and not Star firmware. But I don't think anyone else has reported that on the forum.

Anyway I hope you enjoy your new Star.

best

Thanks David

I am enjoying it very much, my speakers are now my weakest link, being old, second hand Kef Cresta 2 bookshelf speakers, it’s the best they’ve ever sounded though.

I also don’t believe my own conspiracy theory lol

Its a shame though if the musicality has been affected by the FW update, but like you I’m hopeful the next FW update will improve things, if not I’ll look into rolling it back, I imagine you would either need a USB drive containing the 2.4 FW or there’s a way to choose the version on the system via some kind of Service menu.

Hopefully, the mysterious sound quality issue with these firmwares will be resolved soon, at least Naim are aware, and actively investigating it.

Regarding your disappearing USB drive, I would just ignore it. I find browsing and playing it in the Server input better, as metadata is not shown fully via the USB input.
