Cassette Deck for Less than a Grand
Posted by: Minh Nguyen on 11 June 2018
Inspired by the musical offerings provided by Ian (TabbyCat), I am thinking of purchasing a cassette deck for the handsome sum of a grand. What would you suggest? I don't mind pre-loved if it has come from a good home. Are there particular things that I should look out for? For example service history. I may be tempted to spend a little more ????
[@mention:36201736949470193] Thank you for your suggestion. Roon appears to be a popular choice in the Streaming Audio section. To be honest, I'm somewhat out of the loop when it comes to the new offerings available and I really appreciate your insight into what I am trying to accomplish.
[@mention:46760295022432911] Thank you for sharing. I'll definitely do some further research. To be honest, I'm looking for a little hobby to occupy my spare time so what you suggest could keep me occupied for some time.
[@mention:1566878603866111] Thank you for your appraisal of the Nakamichi 482.
[@mention:23389351210890912] Thank you for the advice. I was reminiscencing with Ian [@mention:1566878603896366] this morning and we started talking about cassette decks. I was surprised to learn that I could buy a modest AIWA for £400. After a visit to my dealer this morning, it dawned on me that I'd need to part with my NDS. There were two choices available: (1) I could part exchange and there would be no interruption to my music but I would only receive the modest sum of £3k, or (2) I could sell privately and receive a more handsome sum circa £4.5k. The former is easier but £1.5k is a significant amount of money to lose which is why I lean more towards the latter.
[@mention:1566878603942595] Thank you for being forever helpful.
Thank you for all your contributions. I'm going to choose the sensible option and buy a pre-loved Sony MDS JB930 or JB940. At a future date I would like to also by a record player and make some recordings on tape. I shall call upon your knowledge and expertise in due course. I wish you all a good evening.
Ian, Thank you for your suggestion of posting my query here. I hope you are not disappointed with my decision because I very much respect your advice.

HI Minh,
Good luck and before you go ahead, one thing has just occurred to me that would apply equally if you purchased either a minidisc player or cassette deck.
As a matter of interest, how do you plan to record your files onto either a minidisc player or cassette deck when you have sold your NDS. Do you have the ability to feed a stereo analogue output from your amp to the deck when you no longer have the NDS, or will you make your recordings before you sell the NDS?
Hi Hmack, I am thinking of sourcing a MDP as soon as possible and then copying a selection of my favourite albums before selling my NDS. The MDP will become my main source until the ND555 arrives. I hope that makes sense.
It does, and good luck.
You don't by any chance have an A/V amp tucked away somewhere, do you? And if so, this A/V amp doesn't by any chance have a digital input or a network connection?
I've been struggling with the same dilema... no NDS for a while, and then I realised I have a Yamaha a/v amp that I don't use very often. Mine actually has a network streaming facility as well as a digital input capability, so problem solved... connect the main stereo line out to my 552. The Yamaha control app will make a pleasant change from the Naim app for a while too.
Of course, if you don't happen to have an A/V amp sitting around...

Minh,
Thanks for your kind words. No ,absolutely no disapointment with respect to your discision to go down the mini disc player route. As you have previous experiance with the MD format If you think it will be more suitable for your stop gap until you get your ND 555 that's all that matters.I haven't any experience of MD at all so can't offer anything.
The caveat with the cassette medium you do have to factor in a service cost on anything which has been brought used and a MD player would be a perfect cheap stop gap solution.Anyway nothing to stop you getting a cassette deck in future years
Wishing you a good day
Cheers Ian

SP1000 DAP looks beautiful but it is over £3k! I'm currently bidding on a MDP, the Sony JB940. Described as good condition from one careful owner. Also comes with 10 discs.

Minh,
In respect of digitally adjusting data files you could try a copy of Audacity (freeware) to tame some of the worst sub par files (e.g. a 'too hot' mastering). It's relatively easy to use and with your level of intellect it won't take more than a few experiments for you to work out what effect you can create get the hang of what you need to do with different files.
If you edit a known good file, then you'll also be able to see how much loss of quality you get from the inevitable artefacts created by the additional editing and the necessary re-dithering of the signal.
This option's also much cheaper than Roon.

Eleanor, I had a quick look at the Audacity homepage and it looks really interesting. The codebase is also freeware which means I'll be able to tinker with it should the need arise. Thank you for the recommendation.
[@mention:1566878603942595] Could you please explain to me why it is a contravention of forum rules for a member to mention that they will be selling some of their old gear on a popular auction site?
