Help with Nas please

Posted by: Japtimscarlet on 12 June 2018

I've bought a Qnap 251 Nas and have got it connected to my network and internet etc

I've updated the firmware and downloaded and installed a couple of useful looking apps on it

But at present I cannot seem to get it to be "seen" by my Core although it shows up on my PC network.

Is there a good website or video that anyone can suggest that can walk a numpty though these things

I also wanted to rip my DVD films to it and stream them to my TV...but again no idea how to do It

My WD Nas was quite easy to set up I thought??

A NAS is just Networked Attached Storaged.  The bit you need to configure is the UPnP software on the QNAP so that appropriate devices such as streamers can see it.

You need to instal Asset UPnP server (or similar) on the NAS.

In my ignorance..I thought it would have that installed as standard...so that it could be seen automatically??

Obviously not ...but seems a short coming if a Nas cannot be seen on a network!!

Just been reading about asset ...it's a music upnp ...I just want the Nas to back up my core and stream the DVDs that I dream of putting on it

Does the Qnap not have its own universal upnp software ..as I don't particularly want to use the Nas as a music server for the core ...

Does that make any sense??

I believe that QNAP NAS drives have Twonky UPnP installed as standard although you may have to enable it. Asset will only stream audio files so you will need to have another media server such as Twonky enabled if you want to stream video files.

If you are familiar with Twonky (it was installed on WD MyBookLive drives if I remember correctly) then you can enable and configure this on your QNAP TS251 by clicking on Control Panel>DLNA Media Server and ticking the box next to "Enable TwonkyMedia DLNA Server". Click on "Apply" and that should take you to the Twonky configuration page.

Hi Japtimscarlet

I'd suggest you install Plex Server, from the App Centre. This works well for video. Plex will handle the DLNA aspect, streaming to devices both within the home network and outside it. In terms of ripping your DVDs, you'll need some ripping software - bit depends if you're a Mac or Windows user, but I've used Handbrake very successfully, with the resultant video files sitting happily on my QNAP.

Thanks to all !

Don't particularly want to use twonky again..as mentioned it is on WD Nas and I didn't like it

So the thought are I will have to install something ...and I have heard good things about Plex so might try that

Cheers again

If the NAS is a backup for a Core, you do not require a server. Just follow the instructions on the Core support web page to set up the automated backup process.

(I would still instal a server on it, though, so that if your Core ever fails, you can play your music from the backup while it is being repaired.)
