In which case I think you could like Allaes, and not just because I own a pair. If you had wanted trouser-flappers I was going to mention those JBLs Richard likes.
42.5/Hicap/110 monos which speakers?
Posted by: Bob the Builder on 14 June 2018
I may be buying the above system and was thinking which speakers to match them with budget for them is under £1000 I would like as much low end as is possible with the above amps although I suppose a seperate sub isn't out of the question.
I don't know,but I think Naim Allae is around £ 700:-.
Otherwise, to a classic system..... Classic speakers....Linn Kan or Linn Sara.
I think I would go on a pair of Linn Kan,..if you choose among these two.
With original stand and careful installation. The nap 110 is a very good old amp.
/Peder????
Thanks Peder Kans or Saras are a possibility what about Briks? I've had a pm on another forum from a very respected member well versed in everything Naim and he thinks that the Mono 110's will give as much as 60 watts each into 4 ohm speakers.
Assuming you could find some 'briks I would want to be sure 110 monos had the grunt to drive them nicely - the go to amp in the day was the 250. The obvious choice would be the Kans and they perform brilliantly with that set up. I used to have 42.5 and 110 stereo amp with Kans
250 or 2 x 135
I really like the sound of Kans and have some nice Heywood open frame stands already that would suit them nicely but will they give me enough bass and if not are there more modern alternatives that will.
A 110 was my first Naim amp, which I used with Mk 1 Kans. The amp wasn’t really enough for them and I quickly bought a 250, which really gets them going. They are never going to do deep bass, but they are tight and fast. The Sara 9 is a different matter and they are wonderful with a 250. Reggae through that setup, which I heard at the dealer, was just superb. I can’t help thinking that whatever you do you may we’ll be better with a single 250 than the mono 110s. That’s just instinct though, as I’ve not had the pleasure of hearing them. If you want deeper bass from a sensibly priced speaker, Naim Allaes might do it. They are not hard to drive and the 110s should be ok.
Thank you for all replies so far. Views seem to be split on the 110 monos some prefering them and others the 250 the power rating between the two isn't that great and a single 110 isn't really comparable. I have always liked the look of the Sara though and they might be a consideration as might SBL's but again perhaps a more modern speaker might sound better.
Bob, Are we talking tight-as-a-chuff Naim type of bass from the speakers here, or swing-yer-pants type of bass?
Reggae, Soul and Jazz type bass Christopher not Drum 'n' Bass but not non existent either as I have said a sub is always an option but if the 110's will drive a decent sized driver or floorstander then that would be great.
I had a pair of MkI Kans that I used with a 42/110 back in the 1980s. The original stands lacked spikes so when the spiked MkII stands were released I changed. The Kans sounded much better on the MkII stands IMHO. I later used the Kans with 32.5/HICAP/250. Turntable was LP12/Armageddon/ARO/Troika. This system sounded great. It could be bass light but on a well recorded album, the sound was really engaging

Neat Motive SX2. Arbitrary and deceivingly seducing, but intriguing and full of solid bass. If you don't care about timbral correctness (and for some reasons I think you don't), I'd try to have a listen to those.

I have previously for many years run active "Briks",and know what they need to start "moving Air"... if you understand what I mean ????.
A friend had a nap110, which he wanted to try on my "Briks" to see if it worked.... this was many years ago.
Reason: He had been offered to buy a pair of "Briks" at a very good price.
And.....Yes, it actually worked up to a certain volume.... pretty high indeed.
It moved "not air", but it played well.
We played, among other things, Dylan,I remember.
Another friend who had previously had "Briks", bought this winter a couple again.
He lives in the same city as me,but works in Stockholm (1000km south).
In Stockholm, he has his main system with recapped Naim 135.
In my hometown,at home in his house, is now standing "the Briks" and waiting for him to move home again.
He has a nap110 recapped, as he runs the "Briks" with, until he move home again.... and it plays really well,... But,... "Do not move Air" ????.
So the answer is,your mono nap110, should work on your eventual "Brics", if you're not looking to "move Air"...... something that is Isobariks strength, if you feed them properly with effect.
Have some experience to tell about Linn Kan also, but may return to it..... got visits.
/Peder ????
I use mono 110's. I used them for a short while with Linn sara's and they worked very well. With acoustic music they where top notch.
I use them with Royd RR1's and the combination works very well.

Max,
My mother in law was German and so unfortunately we do suffer from some correctness at home fortunately though not the timbral kind and thank you for your reccomendation.
Bob
For under 1000 you ll not find better then kef 104.2, Just look for a mint one. They do evrything realy ok.easy position front ported, big deep scale sound, good bass, very good mids, highs detailed without overdoing it.In short the ciosest you can get to a titan 606 for less then 1000k.
That’s quite a budget Leni!
OK,1000GBP.you can find a mint one for less, since i use them for more then 25 years i consider them as a great bargain.take into consideration that when they came out they were kef s top of the line(105, 107 came later) speakers (around sbl money).also they are still very easy to service.
???? Hello again Bob the builder,... promised to recur with a bit of my experiences of Linn Kan.
Most of you older here on the forum, which was on the 80 century, know enough of the classic combination,... LP12, Naim Nait, Linn Kan.
It was with that system, almost everyone's "Flat Earth" journey and Introduction to Naim began here in Sweden.
Göran Rudling,.... Former distributor Linn, Naim was incredibly good at spreading the "Flat Earth" message in Sweden.
This little Naim Nait, was incredibly good together with Linn Kan......if you were careful with the installation, otherwise it only sounded like a garish megaphone.
◾ Linn Kan play best,if it gets the signal through a good analogue source.. (turntables), digital source is not as good with Linn Kan. Looks in your profile that you have a LP12, so it looks good.
◾ Linn Kan shall be used with a tripod, and then Linn Kanll-Stand.... forget the first one.
Have seen pictures here on the forum where they have Linn Kan on tables...or bookshelves ????????.
◾ Speaker Cables,...Linn K20 or Naim Naca4 or NACA5.
◾ Was very, very careful with the installation,... Linn Kan may have to stand "rock solid".
I worked on and off for a year, before I was 100% satisfied with the installation.
It played well, but I heard that there was more to take off.
My then listening room was on 33m2, and the speakers stood against the short wall.
I had good bass in that room, many who were there actually looked around looking for the subwoofer ????.
So it is possible to get really good bass from a pair of Linn Kan even in large rooms,...It plays of course not so deep bass...but the base that exists is really qualitative with a good installation.
◾ Stand Spike's should be screwed into the tripod, in other words, as short as possible... tightly tightened, but not overtight.
◾ The stand, the speaker should be slightly tilted backwards towards the back wall.
Evaluate different angles depending on the room.
◾ Distance upper rear loudspeakers against the back wall usually end up between 5-15mm after tuning, this if you have concrete wall.
◾ Avoid the speaker cables from taking in a tripod or a wall.
◾ Retighten and clean the speaker terminals.
◾ Retighten the speaker elements,..I do not remember the moments (Nm),but Retighten and listen you up to the right Nm.
◾ Be careful when you loosen the front cover, it sits with a click Hot melt adhesive in every corner.
Linn Kan is a witty, funny, very musical speaker, which can actually be a funnier music-imparted than Isobarik,... though obviously not better.
Hope you understand what I mean by that.
Naim also has active filters,so you can run it actively if you want to,.... then it becomes really, really good ????.
Would actually like to have a pair of Linn Kan again.
Hope you understood any of this....
/Peder ????
Unfortunately after having someone take a look at the internals of the Mono 110's I have decided not to go ahead with the purchase the trouble is though I had already committed to buy a lovely little 42.5 to go with them and so in my search for a replacement Nap I have ended up with a 102/180 as well! I suppose I will just have to put together a little CB 42.5/110 system for the dining room now.

One of the great classic pairings. Be be too hard on yourself. When I was living down in Dorset I used a Mission PCM7000R with NAC42.5, NAP110, and n-Sats in the dining room and it was great fun. I still have it but not used together anymore.
