Speaker cable
Posted by: tonycurran1 on 20 June 2018
hi members
have been using Naim NAC speaker cable
my dealer had a cancelled order of a 2.5 meter pair of Chord Reference signature cables which he has offered to me at £700 retails at £1125
takin it home to try it about a hour ago
problem is if I try connecting the right speaker output on my 300 amp it won’t reach the right speaker
is there any reason why I can’t connect the right amp speaker output to the left speaker
and left output to right speaker
i know this means the balance control is going to be working the wrong way around on my 252 but I keep the balance control at 12 o clock just checking it’s not going to do any damage before I turn the system back on
many thanks for any advice Tony ????
I don't think you'll find that your amp has any concept of where either of your speakers are placed on the floor. It won't care.
I don’t see why it would be a problem if you don’t mind hearing a mirror image of the intended (and often artificially created) soundstage. If you listen to classical music and can’t live with violins being to your right, you’ll just have to spend the extra cash on longer cables.
Also, 2.5m being below the minimum recommended length for NACA5, your fancy new Chord cables might not be working optimally with your amp.
.....or you could pretend to be a pro and put your amp on the rack backwards ????
Just about the worst Chord speakerwire I tried was their Signature.
I like the idea Chrissu of turning the amp the wrong way around ????
never know it might sound even better they we can all do it ????
I’d do it right and get cables the right length. I certainly couldn’t live with the idea of the left and right channels being reversed. In the context of a £30,000 system it’s surely worth paying the extra for the right length. And how do you know the Chords are better than other options?
Why has no one thought of this before? Of course, the amp should be on the shelf the other way round. This would relieve me of the fear that someone will accidentally nudge the balance control one nano millimeter to the left.

Naim did think of it before, that’s why they put them the ‘wrong’ way round from the start. It’s taken them the best part of 50 years to kick the habit and start putting them the right way round, which they now do on the new Unitis.
I went in behind the frame and found the 2.5 is plenty long enough I was losing about half a meter by not feeding it neatly (lesson learned take your time and put your reading glasses on)

This can only lead to confusion, when someone moves on to reference gear, or downgrades to uniti.

Naim did, but I've not seen an amp back-end first on a fraim in a single image on the system pics thread. By design, this should be normal.

Yes I agree and they are the right way right way round now
i don’t know how to answer your question regarding other cables
as to give the Chords a fair chance I will have a signal running through them 24/7 and sit down and have a proper listen in a week and then decide if it’s a sound I like or not
if I don’t like the sound my dealer will take them back and I would borrow a pair of Luma.

1) Easily avoidable - swap the interconnects on the power amp input - after all the two channels are identical internally. (Some amps don’t ‘hand’ them ar all, just stating Channel 1 and cChannel 2, up to you which you assign.
2) to find out, simply search out the critical minimum spec for naim amps (I can’t remember whether it is inductance or capacitance, but it has been mentioned from time to time on the forum), and likewise the cable spec. Even if not up to the minimum , IIRC it has been said that the more recent amps aren’t so critical, but best check that with Naim.

Ah. Not just a hat stand, is it?

Only if they are too dippy to read either the manual or the writing on the back of their amplifier. You’d think people with the wherewithal to afford a Naim amplifier would have a modicum of common sense.

Would you? Donald Trump?

Nope, no correlation between wealth and commonsense. (And no reason why there should be! I vaguely recall some comedy sketch a good few years ago with “upper class twits” that highlighted this...)

I would assume that having started down this path, Naim will, in time, make the change in all their amps as new models arrive.

To which I’d add, those with nothing nice to say should say nothing at all.

Don’t worry, I did. I decided dippy was nicer than thick. How hard is it to read a set of instructions. Or, heaven forfend, to use a search engine or even to ask one’s dealer. If people cannot cope with plugging in an amplifier, how do they cope with life?
