MuSoQb cutting out
Posted by: Loki on 20 June 2018
What a lovely piece of crafted ingenuity is the MuSoQb. We love it! But, recently and increasingly it has been dropping dead when streaming radio. The wifi is fine, and it will stream the same show when transferred by bluetooth form the iPad via airplay. So what ails our uniquely square audio friend? Firmware is tip top and up to date.
While it’s supposed to work well with wifi, it doesn’t. You need to run an ethernet cable and all will be well.
HH, all has been well until the last couple of weeks when it has become increasingly erratic. Perchance the influence of the northern summer solstice?
Try rebooting everything internet related. Modems etc and the Qb. Power back on with modem/router first Qb last.
Can't agree with that HH. Been using a Muso on Wifi for getting on for two years now, and it has been pretty much rock solid. Obviously running an ethernet cable is the gold standard - wouldn't take issue with that - but not practical for many.
Loki, I'm a bit confused by your statement that "it will stream the same show when transferred by bluetooth from the iPad via airplay." Bluetooth is a direct wireless connection from your device (iPad) to the Muso, whereas AirPlay uses your network router to enable communication between your Muso and AirPlay capable device. Audio is sent wirelessly from the iPad to the Muso via the network router via Wifi, so the communication is not direct (peer-to-peer). Therefore, in order for audio to be sent between the device and the Wireless Music System they must be connected to the same wireless network router.
If you're listening to iRadio and the stream is intermittent, your Wifi is the likely culprit. I suspect that you are using Bluetooth successfully to stream the same show. Think you need to check out your Wifi to see what is going on - does your Muso stream successfully from a streaming service, such as Spotify or Tidal?
The usual fixes for intermittent Wifi include improving the physical proximity of the router to the audio receiver (Muso), or if that isn't possible, looking at Wifi extenders (i.e. Airport Express) or preferably a Wifi mesh system.
As with anything internet or network related, if it can be plugged in, plug it in.
The only things we have on WIFI are our mobile devices. laptops etc.
We had something similar - dropping out often enough to be annoying. An Apple Airport Express has all but eliminated the problem (with the AE doing the wireless bit, and the Qb thinking it's wired).

You're confused!? That's my point. It doesn't make sense. Wifi working for everything else, blue tooth and airplay fine, but cuts out repeatedly for up to 20 minutes when left to stream from wifi. I don't use Spotify or Tidal, just Bifrost. The Qb is within 15', direct line of sight of an airport extreme and about 40 feet from another. As I say, I don't think the wifi is to blame.
Loki,
is this on all stations, I have the same problem but only with BBC stations.

Lindsay

Same here, using Internet Radio, Tidal or CD quality streams from my NAS. I have noticed the odd glitch with hi-res streams, but I tend not to bother with hi-res streams to my Muso Qb.
My stuff is wired, and internet is fine, but some days, radio paradise cuts off randomly - so I assume it's on their end.
I get the once in a while RP cuts, less but not 'no' other cuts. In perspective I can run a whole evening with no cuts, but on another day, a morning, maybe over a few hours I get a cut, maybe more. Thats webradio I guess

Hi Loki - Just to clarify:
1. When you say "Wifi working for everything else" - you mean every other device (i.e. PC/Mac/iPad/iPhone etc)?
2. How exactly do you use Airplay? Is this from an iPad/iPhone to the Muso? As using which source/app?
3. You say that the Muso "cuts repeatedly ...when left to stream from wifi" - from which source/app? I'm not familiar with Bifrost, though a quick Google suggests this is a Schiit DAC device, which I assume has nothing to do with the Muso?
4. What is your network architecture - i.e. what type of router, and does this handle Wifi, or is this task handled by the Airport Extremes? And how are these AE's connected - is one of them the router? Do they use the same SSID?
I would be pretty sure that your issues come down to your network setup, and as HH said earlier you can test this by connecting the Muso via ethernet, at least temporarily - a 15' (5m) cable shouldn't cost too much.
Understanding your usage and network setup would though give a bit more to go on to try to resolve your issues...
