Pink Floyd -making your mind up

Posted by: fathings cat on 03 September 2011

Don't panic it's not a Pink Floyd / Bucks Fizz collaboration......

With the release of PF's albums reaching ever closer anyone made up their mind on what to go for - straight in for the somewhat expensive immersion sets or the complete collection etc.

All reviews seem to be favourable but given cost I want to be sure it's not all about packaging and the sound -demo/outtakes/live represents value.

Any thoughts?
Thanks
Gary

Are the remastered versions as good as the originals or better. In my expereince most remasters are poor in comparison to the originals. If they are better then I will go for the immersion.

I have ordered all the Immersion sets. I am yet to make up my mind whether I will buy the 14 disc box set of all albums. I wish there was an immersion set for Animals.

I was reading Waters plans to do an Animals immersion set - could be a little while as his wall tour has taken it out of him, not getting any younger........

I am with you on the remasters sound quality  hence I will wait a while to see the reviews.

Really hard nota to dive straight in but If it is all packaging and not sound quality I may not invest - more likely temptation will get the better of me though........

Btw you can order a PF vinyl from mojo for £15 - could be a nice little investment...

I was hoping this would be a Buck's Fizz thread, but it is a YAPFT.

The only PF elpee I'd be interested in is Piper At The Gates of Dawn (on vinyl), which is far ahead of anything else they did, I might be interested in Saucerful of Secrets (on vinyl). I have the other albums and even play them occasionally, but I don't think I'd go out and buy them again. PF are not the Beatles, after Syd left they morphed from a wonderful dose of psych into a respectable enough prog rock group. It's not that I don't like the later material it is just I've heard it so often that I don't get excited by yet more versions of the same.

The new Alice Cooper elpee is excellent by the way, but they seem to think £34 is reasonable for the vinyl. It is another example of record companies cashing in. There are three different sets of packaging too. I think the same is true of PF - just how many times can you repackage the same content.

So my advice is if you'd already got these records then stick with what you've got.

I have all Syd's output on CDs, elpees on the original albums and in compilations, and although I would not mind a nice new pressing on Piper, it is not as exciting as if they released those previously unreleased gems they have in DG's safe.

I don't think it is just PF who do this though. I wonder if downloads could put an end to this. Having bought it once, you just download maintenance upgrades.

At least Alice's album is new, but the complex packaging options drive me to distraction (which I think is on the A45).

^^^ Yawn. It's a thread about the forthcoming Pink Floyd reissues, not your self-absorbed drivel.
Posted on: 03 September 2011 by Guido Fawkes

So that is it is it, Mr Chirpa?

Self-absorbed? Sounds like pot calling the kettle black to me.

Though in fairness I probably do post even more than drivel than your good self.

Enjoy your re-re-re-releases.

All the best, Guy

Ah but there is some drivel we've known to love and would certainly miss it were it to disappear so make sure you don't take that (rather rude and not in the slightest bit humorous) remark from chirpy chirpy cheep cheep to heart.

You never know some day I might even buy the original Nirvana

A very interesting idea Guy!  Do you think this could actually work?  Given how all of the labels seem to be struggling financially, I am surprised none of them has come up with something like this.  A yearly fee allowing owners to download any/all new versions for which they are entitled could be a very attractive proposition.  And it would seem a brilliant way for record companies to bring revenue forward.  Hmmm, there must be a fatal flaw here somewhere.  For example,  I imagine it would get rather complicated given all of the cross-licensing agreements.

I have not been tempted by any of the new remastered CDs.

Will see what the vinyl brings.

Is there a complete vinyl box set of all the LPs planned?

Richard,

I hope not.

God knows what that would cost

Im certainly interested in hearing the remasters, and likely will own the cd's, but it seems just from the product descriptions that the "immersion" box sets contain a TON of stuff I can't use -- surround sound mixes on dvd media, quad mixes on dvd media, etc.  The dvd's containing video would be interesting to watch . . . once. That's the same way I feel about all of the outtakes and alternate versions -- not stuff I'd listen to repeatedly, while I DO listen to DSOTM, Animals, etc., every few weeks it seems.

The Dark Side Of The Moon [vinyl] Original Recording Remastered.

"This title will be released on September 26, 2011"

...which is the week after next,

Is this new remastering likely to be better than the 30th Anniversary Edition?

I have a copy of the 30th, dunno if it's worth me buying this new one as well (?)

Stu  -   3rd October is the 1st of the broadcasts

BBC R2 10pm GMT for 1 hour

"Days In The Life" has interviews with David Gilmour, Roger Waters and Nick Mason, alongside the last radio interview from Rick Wright.  Its billed as the story from pre-Floyd 1960's up to Nick and David's live appearance with Roger earlier this summer.

Johnnie Walker will also have a session about Floyd on his "Sounds Of The 70s".   Not sure of the date for this

Unfortunately I will miss it have got to go to watch fish & make sure the sea & sand is the right colour on some obscure  islands in the Caribbean for 4 weeks.  This boredom will get interspersed with checking out the riddums at various jump-ups & fish fries.   Its a tough life but someone has to do it.

I've heard that the long lost master tapes of their missing album "Elk at the Crossroads of Early Evening" may soon be available in both yellow vinyl and "total immersion baptism" versions. It comes with the demo tapes of Nick Mason cutting his toenails in the bath.
