Nova - Blew speaker
Posted by: Obsydian on 23 June 2018
Since the last firmware I have found when powering down I get a louder plop after the Nova relay from my speakers.
Just now I powered down an got an almighty plop but high pitched and loud. As it was so loud I powered back on only to realised my left speaker tweeter and main driver are blown !!!
Uncertain about the right speaker but totally devastated.

I think you're absolutely right, Gazza. It's a bit like divorce... once you get the legal eagles involved, the costs go through the roof. And I wasn't anticipating any qualified lawyers responding here on the forum; it was more of a moral question really. My own similar experience occurred with some audio equipment made in Scotland. In this instance, even though the blown tweeters were a result largely of my own misadventure, a gentleman named Ivor (in Scotland) agreed to their replacement at no cost to myself. As a customer whose loyalties have long since moved south from Scotland to Salisbury, I'd be hoping that Naim would, had it been necessary (and I'm really glad for Obsydian that it isn't), take a similar stance, that was all. Can any of us imagine becomming legally embroiled with Naim? I rather think not, but asking the question - where would they stand? - does no harm, does it?
I understand....having been lucky enough to meet the guys and girls in Salisbury IMO they will do what is right under the specific circumstances. This is not the usual global faceless company.
You wouldn’t become legally embroiled with Naim in any event. Your sales contract is with your dealer so that is where you should turn to sort out any issues with the equipment.

Beryllium copper alloys are common in electro mechanical devices, due to their elastic and conductive properties, but there is no more hazard than with many other alloys. It’s airborne Beryllium that can be harmful if breathed in large quantities for certain people... so yes if one was cutting or drilling beryllium alloys one might take caution with masks or air extraction, but a copper beryllium alloy wire is going to be rather inert, and probably somewhat less harmful than lead based solder of previous years, or chemicals used in circuit board production. I use quite large gauntities of copper beryllium alloy tape with my antennas, no issue at all or even special handling advice. You would probably find as much beryllium in your mobile phone as you would a tweeter voice coil....

That's a comforting thought, S3
I've developed this popping sound when powering on and off since 2.6, predominately the left channel. It's actually not as loud with 2.6.1, but it's still there. I wonder if both of our units have a similar fault (although mines an atom). I use focals, which I believe you do too?
Maybe worth mentioning that in addition to the speaker pop, the unit itself makes a quite loud metallic sound when switched on. I'm pretty sure that's more pronounced since 2.6.
hello all, to be transparent Naim had made an offer yesterday pre this event to swop out the unit for [@mention:1566878604014936] unit as something feels definitely wrong for him compared to our experiences and testing. The mechanics to be worked out Monday. I have also raised to R&D reference the reported pops, as i cant replicate here myself on an early production Nova

Dear [@mention:1566878603913713], I also can confirm that loud popping sound on my Nova (with B&W speakers) while powering on the Nova. It‘s also louder / only on my left speaker (I have to precise that more accurately next time). It seems to happen only after the nova is off / in standby mode for a while and only while waking up / powering on the nova due to sending music to the nova via network / Apple AirPlay. That popping sound is really loud and there is a loud trafo noise / hum before popping for some seconds. So that popping is announced and I know it will be coming before.
My nova is just one month old right now and on the latest firmware. I have so much different problems with my nova unit additionally also described in other threads - „Clicking on the Nova“ (that repeating relais flipping / clicking sound while the nova is off / in standby mode) and „Acryl Plate on Nova“ (that loosing acryl plate on the nova because of a faulty adhesive tape). I‘m very very disappointed with my nova at the moment. My dealer tries to get a replacement device but your german naim distributor just wants to repair the unit as soon as all these problems are officially known. I took pictures and videos with all these problems and did send them to my dealer and the Naim distributor.
Can‘t and don‘t want to think this all is Naim quality standard. Can you help here?
Thanks you for reaching out Trevor, much appreciated.

Trevor, I also have this issue. Are you a naim rep? Any ideas on what I should do to get my issues looked at in more detail too (Im in the UK)?
Trevor is the managing director of Naim Audio (!)

Erm... the beryllium in a beryllium tweeter is actually the diaphagm itself, where it is used for its high rigidity to weight ratio, and that is to what the dexcription ‘beryllium’ refers, not the voice coil alloy.
Beryllium metal is only hazardous if finely devided (e.g. dust from machining) enabling it to be inhaled, or by ingestion, or skin contact in the case of persons sensitive to it. Assuming the tweeted is fitted with some sort of protective mesh over the diaphragm these possibilities could only apply in the event of dismantling the tweeter to make the diaphragm accessible - potential issue with any workshop if people are unaware it is beryllium or unaware of safe handling requirements - and I amagine that is the reason for the speacial packaging.

Well, the intervention of the managing director (Trevor) pretty much answers that question satisfactorily for us

Many thanks.
Just for the record, and this may or may not be related, but a few months ago my Atom let out a loud pop from the R speaker, which then died. It was using the HDMI input at the time. Switching input didn’t restore the sound, but it did later return to normal after a restart.
At the time I put it down to the ever troublesome HDMI input, which has never worked reliably, but maybe it was something else?
