Fraim stacking order (again...) for full SL loom

Posted by: crackie on 23 June 2018

Hi all, about to complete my full SL loom and I am about to switch around my fraim stcking order to:

top to bottom:

ndac

252

300 head unit - (HDX now here)

HDX - (300 head unit now here)

supercap

CD555PS

300 PS

This is to ensure all the cable are 100% off the floor (only one of the 300 burndy is touching the floor now & I did not bother me too much) , especially the SL XLR/DIN amp cables. Space is very tight and I cannot split the frame to 2 stacks unfortunately.

Any thoughts as to the proposed stack order ? I worked out the ndac to 252 SL DIN loop touching the fraim problem by placing the ndac as far back on the glass shelf as it will go, so sorted there & I think the ndac is OK to be on top (I did think about the 252 being on top though).

Could you have 2 stacks instead of one? Assuming that’s not possible for space reasons the order looks ok but, if it helps, I’d not worry about having the 300 burndies touching the floor as they are the most forgiving of the Burndies in that regard. I’d also try the 252 on top as many have said that it benefits from that.

I’ll play around with it, but the nDAC may have to stay on top as I suspect the 555 Burndy will be a tight fit on the second shelf. And may well be impossible if I need to place it right back on the glass shelf again to ensure the SL DIN to DIN interconnect is not touching the Fraim.

The more I think of it the HDX will be going down one more shelf as the RF and other junk electronic pollution it must generate right next to the 252 would be quite a lot.

Cheers

It’s the 252 nDAC and their respective power supplies you can play with a bit, if the 252 goes on top the 555ps can swap with the supercap, this might be worth exploring to escape the 252 sandwich but I’ve no direct knowledge of the 252’s sensitivity to this. I’ve played with 282 and 552 and they don’t react the same to being above or below a CDX2 head unit.

Look at a double stack if you can swing it.   The extra base costs a little more but it gives you a lot more stability and utility.

So I moved the HDX and 300 head unit around a few days ago and............

Wow, I used to think Fraim stacking order was a bit of ho hum - whatever, cannot really be arsed  playing around with it too much- not anymore, the system now has “more balls” and not in a subtle way either. It’s as though the HDX (right under the 252) was holding back the attack and dynamic range or something similar.

And I haven’t even got the SL amp cables in the chain yet. Happy as can be from such a simple stack swap, go figure...............

order doesn't matter at all. All in da mind.

Terry , it’s now as per my original first post.

I still think it was most beneficial moving the HDX down one spot. Now burning in my SL amp cables.

If you want to tell yourself that, fine, but many others will differ.  I've experimented and heard a clear difference.

No, we’re all deluding ourselves. Listen to the chap with the Linn all in one.
