New App/ Google Analytics

Posted by: TallGuy on 25 June 2018

SInce I installed the new app (5.10) on two iPhones and an iPad I'm getting pop ups every few days telling me I've got Google Analytics turned off and telling me I can turn that feature on. I know it's off, I turned it off so I don't need reminding.

Is anyone else seeing this and is this a bug ? I'm sure it's not in the spirit of GDPR to keep pestering me so I'm guessing it's a bug.

(I'm asking as I have a loan unit, which I obviously haven't registered - I'm also being prompted to do that, but won't as it's a loan device while mine's away. I wonder if that's causing this - though even if it is the reason I don't believe it should)

No problems here, just reinstalled my iPhone X and iPad Pro. Did you try deleting the app, reboot your phone and install it again?

Yes, it keeps coming back - it looks as though it's a fixed time after installation, but I've not had it long enough to decide if that's actually the case yet.

..........  why not turn Google Analytics on ???   what harm/bad do you think it will do ??   I have it turned on & have done so since that feature was intro'd.

Surely key questions before installing ANYTHING that you see no need for (actually, also the unanswered questions of the ones you do know you want): What does it do? (In this case, presumably, what does it analyse?)  Who does it tell? How much memory does it use? how much data transmitted when in mobile mode?

Very true,  if you don't know or don't want it.   Google Analytics has been around for a while,  possibly only with iOS beta apps,  but Naim have it included for a reason & I trust Naim & it is not causing me any issues other than touching Install (just the once) at each new app install.

I will ask Naim beta team if why & what for its actually used for on the public apps

You can easily find out what it is and does and I don’t want it tracking what I’m doing, which is why I made the considered decision to turn it off. That being the case my decision should be respected surely ?  It has been until this version of the app.

While I may trust Naim there’s no indication that the data isn’t being shared (against my will, as I don’t get a choice of what it’s used forJ  and I’d therefore rather keep it off as I certainly wouldn’t want it shared as it’s no-one else’s business what I’m doing with the app - I’m using it to control my equipment as the supplied controls don’t allow that to be done fully. I really don’t want, as an example, my music choices tracked and or analysed, nor how loud I set it, when I’m using the app, etc. Not necessarily paranoia, just not wanting to share this information.

Hi @TallGuy -

Both the registration and the Google Analytics prompt should be one time only, the first time you connect to that unit, and the decision you make should stick.  I haven't heard any other reports of this, so it might be that your loan unit is not remembering the decision, so the next time you connect it is asking you again, and why you see it on two devices.  What is the product you have on loan?  I'll talk and test with the team here and see what resolution we can find.

Thanks,

Greg

i can openly confirm that in compliance with our privacy policy (available on our website) we do not share the data. It is deliberately an opt-in not an opt-out so that we can only have such data with active permission, and we respect the choice of our customers.

Greg, thanks. It’s a Nova.

Trevor, thanks for confirming - I haven’t seen this with my own Nova, or previous versions of the app, but with two variables (non registered  loan device and new app version), I wondered why  the apparent change in behaviour occurred, hence asking whether anyone else had seen it before raising it as a possible bug.

Google’s reputation being what it is for data collection made me feel a little uneasy seeing the message.

[@mention:72103499036178358] I've done some testing and spoke to our test teams and this is not a known issue.  Can I ask that you try a full uninstall of the App on all devices, then reinstall from the App Store and try again please?  This should clear the devices cache of your answers (which may have got corrupted) and it will ask again when you launch the app from fresh, but then hopefully your answers will stick.

Give it a try but if it still occurs after that then we will need to get you talking to Tech Support so we can perform some more detailed troubleshooting.

Greg, I’ll do that when I’ve posted this, but be aware the message initially popped  a couple of days after install  and then about the same time between occrances (sorry, not been making notes; I will now) so it will probably be a few days before I get back on this.

Thanks for responding quickly.

Watch this space.....

David

EDIT: removed and reinstalled. Message popped up after about a minute. I selected not to turn on Analytics, now to wait for it to reappear (or not). iPad mini 4 and iPhone 7 Plus. I’ll ask my wife to do the same with her iPhone 8 when she gets home.

It's been several days now and I haven't seen the message again following it popping up immediately after removal/reinstall of the app, so looks as though Greg is right about this.
