New upgrade - initial verdict

Posted by: nickfoss on 29 June 2018

After a lot of research and seeking of advice from Forum members (you know who you are) I upgraded my old system 122x and 150x for a preloved 282 and 250 DR from those preloved specialists in St Albans.

I retained my CDX 2 and Flatcap 2X ( which I will be changing for a HCDR within the next couple of weeks ).

The speakers are Wison Benesch Arcs.

The old system was great but perhaps there was something missing.

Well the new amps arrived today.

The 250 had been sent to Naim for service and DR upgrade and not really been played since.

Despite this and straight out of box , after being expertly talked through the installation by James at TT, it was apparent that this was a serious upgrade.

"But it may sound a little harsh until it warms up and it will take 100 hours for the 250 to be run in . Go away and come back in an hour " was James' advice.

Ok an hour later , I timed it , what a difference. Already it sounded warmer . It has really brought my speakers to life and I thought they were good before. I am hopeless at explaining these things and marvel at some of the explanations / descriptions from other members but to me the music just sounded so good , alive.

I am happy now but if this keeps improving over the next few months particularly with the addition of the Hicap DR I am going to be exteremly pleased.

Just need to save my pennies for a decent preloved XPS . I think that will be it then....I promised the wife after all.

If anyone is interested I will give my further thoughts in a month or so

Nice one Nick.

IMHO you have arrived at the sweetest of sweet spots in the Classic range with 282/HiCapDR (soon)/250DR. You also went to the right place. James is a real gent.

When you finally get your power supplies sorted you will be flying.

Always pleasing to learn that someone is happy having made a change. The 282/250 is a great combination that I enjoyed for quite a while. I felt it had that happy combination of hi-end refinement with an ability to boogie.

Nick ..... you are in for a real treat when you have around 200 hrs under the belt - the DR 250 sounded poor on start up, after 50 hours much improved, after 100 hours terrific and after 200+ fabulous.... changes leveled out then.

Congratulations, is a great combination. After warm up / break in you will have a very enjoyable combination. Keep us updated beyond the 200 hours point.
