Naim Unitiserve SSD

Posted by: dalmatian on 30 June 2018

I have a Naim Superuniti playing through Naim Allaes and I’m thinking do adding a Naim Unitiserve SSD which is a pre owned unit, I have tried ripping my CD collection to my Apple IMac but it’s always a bit of a faff to play anything through it as I mostly stream music through Spotify.

I’m thinking having a Unitiserve I will be able to rip my CD collection to it, have it connected to my Superuniti and play albums via my iPad app? I would like things simplified, so the question is, will this give me what I’m looking for, it’s a stand alone unit that I won’t have to have connected to a PC that all of my collection will be available at the touch of an iPad?

Thamks,

Nick

The SSD version of the Unitiserve does not have internal storage for a music library like the HDD version. It has all the same ripping and serving function, but uses other storage on your network, on a NAS or a computer.

You can control most of the Unitiserve functions via the N-Serve app on iOS devices. You control play from the Naim app, where your music collection would appear in the UPnP input menu.

An alternative approach, which is cheaper, but does require the use of a computer, is to rip and manage your collection using DBpoweramp on a computer, and run an ordinary NAS (usually QNAP or Synology) for storage, and to run a server software. Once your music collection is on the NAS, that can also be browsed and played through the Naim app.

To add to what Chris says, you could look for a pre-owned Unitiserve (ie not SSD). That has inbuilt storage and you don't need to have a NAS or to use your pc for ripping.

The n-serve app you use to control the Unitiserve (ripping, metadata editing etc) is available for IOS and Mac, but not Android or PC. There is a similar programme called Windows DTC for PC. So to avoid using a PC much at all, you will need to have an iPhone or iPad. The Naim app for IOS which you use to control the SuperUniti is quite a bit better (more stable mainly) than the Naim app for Android, at least currently.

Thanks for the replies, it seems what I’m looking for is the HDD  version with the built in memory. You have saved me from making a mistake in buying the SSD version.

Thanks again,
