Headamp for use with Atom

Posted by: Stover on 01 July 2018

Hi all

What can be connected to my Atom to achieve the best working conditions to my Focal Elear headphones? I want to keep the Naim user interface as with Atom, 272 etc, but with better amp driving the phones. If possible, I want to avoid solutions as Atom- Dac V1, due to redundant preamps.

Any suggestions?

Stover, the Atom does of course have its own headphone output and it's strong enough to drive a pair of Elears (I've tried, briefly in Trevor's office at the factory) , however it doesn't have facility for a tape out or line out, which is what you would need to use it with a dedicated separate headphone amp.  There is a pre-amp out but it means going through 2 volume controls with the attendant frustration and loss of performance.

Hi Richard. Thanks, I must admit I took a bit to easy on this, assuming Atom would be a bad match with Elear, have not even tried them together. Also assumed that the pre out where a power amp can be connected could be used in this case.

I really like your moderate approach in this case and listening to Aage Kvalbein/ Elisabeth Norberg Schulz (which I know very well). Atom- Elear with the Cardas adaperplug (following the Cardas extension cable)  play just beautiful together. Will try this over some time and will do some better research next time

Stover, from what I can ascertain the Elear was designed to not be too hard to drive and fairly forgiving so should be expected to work well with the onboard headphone outputs on Naim kit.
