No Cover Art for aiff Files on the Core
Posted by: tmtsui on 02 July 2018
Hi,
I am a new user of Core. I have quite some aiff files (over 20,000) and all of them have cover arts and can be shown properly in iTunes and Audirvana.
However, when they are put in the downloads folder on the Core, only a small portion of them displaying their covers properly on Naim app. Worth note that most of these files can show their covers properly via the “book” icon.
Playing these files are of no problem.
Have tried refreshing the image cache, etc. on the app. Even tried factory resetting the Core. But so far not helping.
Checked the music files with covers properly showing but have no idea why their covers can be displayed and others’ can’t.
Wonder if anyone has encountered the issue ? Any suggestion for fixing the issue is appreciated.
Thanks

Could you possibly send me one file from one of the albums that are causing you grief? I'd like to have a look at the metadata.
Thanks,
Adam
Surely no problem Adam. How could I give the file to you or to anyone who offers help ?
My email is in my profile. Please send me one file via WeTransfer.
Click on your profile and don't find any link for WeTransfer or sending file. Sorry that I am not familiarize with the Forums operation.
Do you think it is okay for me to put the song on Dropbox for you to download? or please tell me how to use WeTransfer

I’m not sure if there is an automated way to change the image name, but if not, it would be a very long and tedious process. At least the FLAC convertion, while it might take some time, could be just left alone to complete, but you’d want to do a few trial albums first.
The Core can't do conversions from anything to anything, even if they were ripped by it, which these files are not. So the transcoding would need to be done outside the Core and copied into downloads again.

understood and you are right.
As I understand it, although the files cannot be converted by the Core, they can still be converted by DBpoweramp and other converters without removing them from the Core downloads folder. This is certainly the case with the Unitiserve, anyway.

Before you get too bogged down with time consuming conversions, I would suggest that you talk to Phil Harris via his post above, and see if he can get to the bottom of the issue. The rest of us are just amateurs!

Yes that would work in the Core too.

Hi,
If you are sure that the files are tagged with cover art then could you get one of the albums over to me - phil.harris@naimaudio.com - via something like "WeTransfer" so that we can take a look and see why the cover art isn't being extracted.
Best
Phil
Hi Phil,
Have sent you the file via email. Sorry that I still haven't figure out how to use the "WeTransfer" option. If possible, maybe you could help pass to Adam as well.
Best
Tom

Hi Adam,
I did that but there's only birthday, location and system details on your profile page and i don't find any email address at all.
I have sent a copy of one of the songs to Phil and asked if he could send you a copy as well. If it doesn't work, I'll figure out how to do it later.
Sorry, I'll need to off line for now and will get back to you later.

Converting my files to FLAC is not an option since I am using Audirvana's iTunes integrated mode to control the playing of music files. As you know that FLACs are not recognized in iTunes.
For the second option of creating album folder.cfg...oh my goodness.
As mentioned in my post earlier, if most other music player programs on the market can see the cover of aiff files without any issue, I thiink Naim should have reviewed the issue seriously as a key equipment manufacturer. No hard feelings and pardon me to say so.
I'm not familiar with your Bricasti, but I'm not sure that you need to use Audirvana. With a network connection, I believe it should find the UPnP server that the Core runs, and should be able to play any files on the Core from that. It also has an SPDIF input, so you could try that if the Core is physically close enough. Perhaps worth experimenting with these options to see which you prefer, as they will probably all have different functionality and sound quality.
(As an aside, it seems that Apple are in the process of bringing FLAC compatibility to their products, so maybe this will soon cease to be an issue.)
In the meantime, lets hope Phil can get to the bottom of your artwork issue, then perhaps this will all be of merely academic interest.

Hi Adam,
Have just sent you the file. Thanks for helping this out.

I've popped the file over to the software guys to determine why the cover art isn't being pulled from the tags ... the Book brings up the cover art as that does a lookup for the 'liner notes' details.
I'm sure they'll look into it in due course.
Best Regards
Phil Harris
Thanks very much Phil.

True, the Bricasti can find the music files in the Downloads folder on Core -- not those ripped by Core and save onto the other directory.
But for the moment, most of of songs are stored in this way, so I'll need Audirvana to play them.
Surely if the cover art issue is solved, Naim App will be a good one to do UPnP streaming without the Mini and Audirvana.
Hope that Apple will accept FLAC. Similarly, heard rumours about Apple bringing hi-res files to iTunes. Still no sign yet
I think I found your culprit….
- Metadatics view - this is probably the best tool for analysing and changing metadata
- nServe view - this is a Mac’s version of the Naim server’s administration tool.
Adam, if you change that in Metadatics, does N-Serve then show the artwork?
If I change the ‘front cover’ in Metadatics, then n-Serve ‘reads’ it ok.
Adam Zielinski posted:If I change the ‘front cover’ in Metadatics, then n-Serve ‘reads’ it ok.
Nicely done - 1 down, 19,999 to go!
Hi Adam,
Interesting finds of the culprit.
I mainly use iTunes or dBpoweramp to rip my CDs into AIFF. Worth a note that most covers were added manually since I usually scanned the covers myself or searched for the quality ones online.
And the strangest thing is: there are still albums able to display their covers properly.
Anyway, I believe your findings about "other" or "front cover" should shed some lights for Phil and his coworkers to look into the problem.
Thanks very much

What is the file size of the images you added? If they are too large, or the wrong format, that could cause problems.

500 x 500 in the sample I’ve received.
It's great that there's a potential understanding of what's causing the problem, and that the Naim guys are looking into it too.
In the meantime, there are plenty of services that will automatically create the folder.jpg files for you. There's some software from the dbPoweramp guys, or something like Bliss. I've used Bliss for ages and it's pretty good.
Yes, most of them are 500 x 500 in jpg
OK, should be fine then.

Thanks Gavin. I have dbPoweramp and use it to rip AIFFs. What is the utility called that automatically creates the folder.jpg, do you remember ?
