multiple copies of songs

Posted by: Hungry_Otter on 02 July 2018

Can anyone explain the cause (and ideally solution) to the fact that when my music library - input via iTunes stored on an external NAS - is read by the Naim app, it places multiple copies (most often 2 but sometimes 3) of songs onto my phone and iPad?

Many thanks

Primarily because iTunes thinks it should be the sole repository for all the music in your life (and so sometimes it won't play nicely with anything else).

Do you have an iTunes music library on a computer, which you have then copied onto the NAS? If so, the server runnung on your NAS has presumably scanned your network for music stores, and found them both. So you would want to either prevent the iTunes library from being discoverable via the computer settings, or tell the server to ignore it.

Thanks for reply. No, my music library is only on the NAS.

Hi do you have a computer if so load something like musicbee scan your nas and if multiple copies of tracks appear select one in musicbee you can they tell it to open in windows explore and it will give you the filepath rinse repeat if duplicates are stored in different locations you will know.

Am sure there are other bits of software to do that as well

Thanks. Musicbee looks great - pity there isn't a Mac version.

I should say that, as far as I can tell, I don't have multiple copies of files on the NAS. It is just when the Naim app or other apps gather the song info, they make multiple copies. I think Roon doesn't do this, so it looks like I'll need to keep up my subscription.

The Naim app is a dumb recipient of information and cannot make multiple copies. All it does is show what your upnp server sends it. I’d suggest using a different server, such as Minimserver or Asset, depending on which nas you have.

As HH says the app is just a dumb viewer,  your problem is with iTunes,    I first tried it when I got the iPad for streaming,  it took me a few hours to realise I did not like what it does & found it was so much easier with NAS & media server software.

It is a mystery. Am trying out Asset at the moment, but the signs are not good. I have some playlists of old (60s, 70s, 80s) music. The Asset list on my phone is showing such classics as "He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother" by Billy Idol, and "The Ballad of John & Yoko" by (of course) Julie Miller! And who can forget Beethoven's "The Lovecats"?

As others have said, it's not the app, and it's not Asset.

Asset simply builds lists from the metadata in the files on the NAS, and the Naim app simply displays those lists.

The problem you most likely have is incorrect metadata in the files.  This means that you probably have files with conflicting metadata information, probably in multiple files, (possibly that iTunes has merged into the repository) hence the appearance of multiple 'copies' of the same song.

You need to look at the NAS to ensure that you only have one Music repository, and you need to look at the files in that Music repository and look at their metadata.

If your music is on a NAS, iTunes is presumably no longer involved, and was just used to either download or rip your music. It will be the UPnP server on your NAS that communicates with your streamer and the Naim app. I would persist with trying to get a tried and tested server such as Asset working. (By the way, what NAS are you using?)

You might want to put a metadata editor such as Metadatics on your Mac, so that you can look at the metadata in detail and see it it needs to be corrected.

Hi. I had the same issue.

I discovered that the problem was caused by the NAS software (in my case Twenty on a WD MyCloud) updating the files as a 'continuous' process. On the advice received via this forum, I changed the setting to 'daily' - or some such - at a specific time, and have had no problems since. Hope this helps.

The downside of this (in my experience) is that it can take up to 24 hours before a ripped CD is visible in the naim app.

Interesting - thanks. Probably no coincidence that I'm also using a WD MyCloud. I'll give this a try.
