Morrissey?

It's a shame for his fans because I would be really upset and let down if a hero of mine started to say the things Morrissey is claimed to have said recently.

Always controversial has he over stepped the mark this time with his support of far right protestor Tommy Robinson and also his support of the For Britain political party.

"I have been following a new party called For Britain which is led by Anne Marie Waters," said the controversial musician. "It is the first time in my life that I will vote for a political party. Finally I have hope. I find the Tory-Labour-Tory-Labour constant switching to be pointless."

Or is Morrissey just being Morrissey again?

Doesn't he live in a castle in Hollywood or something ?     Also pulled out of his upcoming tour !  Definitely has issues with his career.

Although it has been said he makes an awesome Veal Milanese

A Smiths loving friend recently opined that the gladioli-ed one had, "gone all Katie Hopkins".

I just stick to the music.

Only being what he's always been - a complete knob.

It seems like Morrissey’s right wing views are nothing new I always new he held slightly extreme views regarding animal rights but it seems the boy with the thorn in his side doesn’t believe in the rights of humans.

It is a shame because he wrote some beautiful lyrics about the human condition and human behavior and the music her wrote with Johnny Marr is some of the best music to come out of the 1980’s.

Will it stop me enjoying their music? I don’t think so.

So what difference does it make?

A friend of mine once recommended me to "enjoy the art, even if you don't enjoy the artist."  (This is the context of my remark that I'm excited to see Beck, "even if he's a Scientologist.")  Not bad advice!

At some point, each of us cannot separate the two and that seems normal and human.

Yes to a degree but of course it depends on the sins of the artist and wether or not you personally feel it doesn't matter.

I would imagine someone directly affected by the far right who is also a big Smiths fan may be very offended and upset enough by Morrissey's words to not want to listen to his music anymore.

After Pete Townsend was aressted for accessing Child pornography sites (yes I know the excuse he gave) I personally couldn't listen to his music for many years afterwards and was really angry.

Right from the beginning, I found Morrisey's media persona annoying but boy could he craft a song. From Reel Around the Fountain to The Hand that Rocks the Cradle his early stuff was mesmerising and has stood the test of time. Is he a knob - almost certainly - but they are only opinions and I think he is harmless enough. My only regret is that he didn't get off the stage earlier and that way the press may well have forgot about him altogether. I never will though, I will always play his (the Smiths) music.

I have just come across another Morrisey thread on another forum with a link to an article in the Guardian that has many Morrissey quotes dating back to the 80's that are extremely dodgy. I for one I'm quite shocked I just thought he was another millionaire socialist who talked b******* from time to time how wrong was I.

I've listened to and bought The Smith's records since I was 14 years old but luckily never bought into the Morrissey myth infact I paid no attention to him at all and so finding out after all these years that he isn't just a bit of a joke but a nasty little racist parading around disguised as a bit of an enigma is quite shocking.

And for those of you who say he is harmless and it doesn't matter well it does matter because when you have been given a platform and because of your music some people actually take notice of you you have a responsibility.

I do feel sorry though for the many thousands who bought into the Morrissey myth I'm afraid all those sad lyrics were not heartfelt but were made up to portray an image of lament and of unrequited love when really all along he was a nasty, narcissistic knob head.

I am sure he is a knob but its about music, first and foremost.

I have never heard anything racist in his lyrics. His songs seem to be about the human condition.

I take about as much notice of rock singers political opinions as I do rating my local MP's humming.

This is the man who in 2015 said that “suicide is admirable”. That goes to prove that there is more than one use for a cloaca!

Could someone explain where the merit lies in his solo oeuvre? At its best it’s a pale reminder if his former band. Generally it falls well short of that. Much as I liked the Smiths I’ve not once been inclined to purchase his solo stuff.

I'm no expert, but it's often quoted that Johnny Marr was the perfect foil to Morrissey.  Reining the Smiths into acerbic but not too caustic directions by having a more optimistic sunshine boy jangle handle.

Telling that Morrissey titled his debut solo album Viva Hate.
