Uniti 2 to Star

Posted by: timpd on 05 July 2018

I am considering the move from a Uniti 2 to UnitiStar. My Uniti 2 is boosted with a NAP250.2. One dealer suggested I keep the 250.2 but wouldn't I get the sound signature of the 250 rather than the Star or is that all wrong.? I like the Uniti 2 , sometimes I think it's all I want or need but now and again it sounds harsh and a bit heavy handed. I don't want to go in to separates as I use all the facilities of the Uniti. So , if I change do I keep the 250.2?  The speakers are ATC 11 but could change. I was impressed with Proac D20R with a Star.

I went from a Uniti to a Superuniti, massive step up, try to listen to one before making a decision, you can pick them up for around £2000 which is a bargain.

I’m moving a Cute 2/NAP 100 to a new media room and upgrading to a Nova and Core. You have quite a bit of power. You could consider upgrading your source with the core (it’s a better ripper than the star) or get a second hand UnitiServe. I’m not familiar with your speakers - are They matched power wise for the NAP250?

If you can do without the CD player then the obvious route is a 272 as you already have the 250.2.  This will be much better than utilising part of an all in one.

Is the 250.2 a DR model, if not how old is it as maybe it needs a service?

I went from the U2 to the Star and the upgrade has been fantastic! I think they’ve improved the streaming so much that it sounds as good as a good recorded CD. I do not suffer from streaming dropouts anymore either. The Star sounds closer to that of the XS  and less like the 5i which dropped the harsh sound I got from the U2 as well.

Using the 250 is up to you, I run Dynaudio Focus 260s and the Star powers them very well! I’m sure the Star would power the speakers you have as well, but personally I have no experience with them.

I want all the functionality of the Uniti 2 but a smoother sound. I will listen some more to see if the Star is the answer.

Yea you want the Star!

But do I want or need the 250.2?

The only true way to know that is to test the Star with your speakers without the 250 and see how you like the presentation. Looking at the SCM11 specs I’d say you probably don’t need the 250, but again that would be entirely up to your personal preference.

The pre-amp has a lot of influence on the sound, even more than the power amp. So a 272 would probably be a much better component, and you could use something like a Cambridge Audio CXC as a CD transport if you need one.

The 250 (any 250) as a regulated power amp, should wipe the floor with the power amp section of any Uniti product past or present.
