Naim Uniti Atom

Posted by: chrisgibbions on 13 July 2018

hello there,

this is my first post on here.

recently I’ve bought an Atom and all is good apart from it doesn’t seem to play through AirPlay.

i also have a Qb in another room. This is on the same server and hard wired via nether net too - this causes no problems.

is anyone else on here having the same issue with the Atom? It sees my Wi-fi network and temporarily connects....but when I press play on iTunes it says “unable to connect to Atom”....

Any suggestions very welcome - getting this working is central to my use of the Atom.

If this is going to be an ongoing concern then I would regrettably have to change to soemhjng else.... which if I’m honest, I don’t want to do as everything also about the Atom is great!

thanks

Chris

Have you enabled airplay in the input settings?

Posted on: 13 July 2018 by chrisgibbions

Yes I have - as I said, it works with my Qb but not the Atom.

tried again today as just back from work - still not working.

Really hoping that the tech people at Naim get on to this. So far my enquiries have been met with, “its been elevated to head office”.

As yet I’ve had nobody from head office contacting me....

hello Chris

i have passed this over to Naim technical support directly,

Trevor

Thanks Trevor - are you working at Naim?

Chris, Trevor is Naim's Managing Director, so you're in good hands I think....

Oh....

Brilliant!

Chris, assuming this is not fixed, power down the Atom unplug it from the mains and restart.  If that doesn't help restart your router s often connectivity things are multifactorial and not just due to the receiving device.

You may hav tried these steps and they failed, but if not it's worth a shot.

Thanks for the advice.

just tried restarting both the Atom and my router but no change.

NB - Chromecast works fine!

That's a shame.

I had an odd situation a few weeks ago when Chromecast was not working but Airplay was.  (My solution won't help as it involved reinstalling firmware which is not an option for you currently).

It might be worth trying a Factory Reset from the Settings icon on the Atom's front panel - you have to re-pair the remote and go through setup again.

Beyond that I'm not sure we can suggest much.

Personally I think most of the time it's network issues, as even though Chromecast is recognised, different services can fail to be seen and figuring out where the problem lies is tricky hence my suggestion to restart devices.

The only other thing I'd maybe try is disabling Airplay in the Naim app then restart everything again and re-enable Airplay, again may or may not help, but won't do any harm.

Hi Alley Cat,

are you part of the naim technical team?

I’ll try all those things tomorrow but I have to say, this is the only time I’ve had any issues with AirPlay. It’s been, up until now 100% reliable, streaming to many different devices, in different situations/countries.

Thanks for the advice though - I appreciate any help with this.I’m surprised that no body else on here seems to have had this issue?

I’m a sound recordist for TV and I’m pretty used to solving sound problems when they arise - there’s a logic to how to go about ascertaining what exactly the issue is. So far, logically it points to something not quite right with how the Atom interacts with AirPlay.....

Desperate to get this solved.

I've had that problem a couple of times in the last few days; iTunes pauses for a while not playing anything and then says "unable to connect to ..., would you like to use the built in speakers?"  This is on a new iMac running the latest apple OS, and iTunes 12.8.  I didn't notice it ever doing that until I upgraded to 12.8  But I also have been doing a LOT of iTunes music library fiddling, like adding a bunch more music and organizing etc.  I also have an Atom (2.6.1), and my solution whenever that happens has been to quite iTunes and restart and that clears it up.  But this problem may be different because I normally can play using airplay.

Airplay is brilliant on the Atom, the atom's volume control feeds back to the mac and moves the volume slider at the top of itunes, and visa versa.

hope that helps,

Sheldon

Thanks for the advice Sheldon,

yep I’ve tried all of the obvious things like powering down, resetting to factory settings, restarting router, powering down iTunes, Ethernet cable out and back in, tried if direct with Wi-fi too, I’ve tried taking by Qb out of the equation too.

The common factor in all of this is the Atom not wanting to play ball with Airplay. In my opinion it can’t be to do with my router or cabling or Airplay or iPhone or laptop.....I’m pretty sure it’s the Atom

UPDATE!!

I’ve ended up taking the Atom back to the hifi shop in Nottingham.

Testing on the shops network, the problem was still there (thank the lord!)

Jerry at Castle Sound and Vision has been brilliant and will be delivering a new Atom in the next day or so!

So, problem solved.... Wierdly there was something wrong with my original Atoms ability to accept streamed audio via Airplay.

Though on using the shops display Atom now temporarily at my home, I have to say that it’s connecting much faster and slicker than the original unit. Maybe there was a deeper hardware related issue??

Anyhow, very happy now and a relief it wasn’t an annoying network issue.

Thanks for all the suggestions on here and to the guys at Castle!

No, I do not work for Naim, but have a lot of experience with other streaming platforms, and network issues are a very common cause of problems that are difficult to sort out, but you'd be surprised how restarting various components sometimes kicks devices into submission!

Your issue sounds very much like my Chromecast problem - other services worked find, no issues for many months before using it or Airplay.

My solution was a firmware reversion and it just fixed it, and this was maintained when I upgraded again to the latest.  I can only assume some setting got corrupted and a firmware installation just corrected it - you cannot reinstall current software AFAIK, and older versions of software are not readily available, though Naim support allowed some of us who wanted to revert to an older version to do so by providing the older file on an individual basis (the reason being they want to assess numbers who preferred an older version rather than just providing download links whereby people might try older ones for the heck of it).

I see, thanks Alley Cat,

think the issue is resolved now - there was some sort of problem with the Atom itself (I think?)

surprising really for me but I’m getting a replacement tomorrow.

thanks for all your advice though.
