New Uniti and turntable... some issues

Posted by: Emme on 16 July 2018

Hi everyone,

I'm trying to setup a system based on the new Uniti Star with only one input, the main source for me: the turntable (currently a Wilson Benesch The Circle with a Benz Ace Low).
I've tryed different configuration (cables, RCA and DIN connection, phono stage) but I cannot find a sound on the same SQ of the digital stage of the Star (flac format -SD or HD- from the HDD via USB input). The sound is flat and not very musical, as in the box.
It's really strange, because in every previusly system I owned, this analogue combo was superior to every high-quality digital source connected (Aries streamer, CD player, etc.).
Could be the input stage of the Star (or generally of new Uniti range) that has not a great performance?
Thank you.

I run an LP12/Ittok/Troika/Stageline through my Nova and it sounds wonderful - much better than through my previous Superuniti. The new Uniti series  does digitise analogue signals (unlike the previous Unitis) but in my experience that does not preclude a good sound from the analogue inputs. (Just to hopefully forestall any digital haters!).

I recall that others on this Forum have reported good results from their vinyl via the new Uniti series. It may be that the digital part of the new Unitis is so much improved that it has closed the gap between vinyl and digital in your system. You seem to be experiencing a comparative rather than absolute difference so it may be that there is nothing wrong,  just something better.

Thank you PEV, what about the power supply of your StageLine?

I will try other configurations....

Hi Emme - I use a non Naim power supply which was way cheaper than a Hi-cap (or even an i-Supply) so nothing special there.

(I was, and still am pissed off with Naim for not having a powered input for a phono stage on the SU and the new Unitis unlike nearly all their other preamps and all in ones)

also the SU have the same issue with the SL?

Yep - original Uniti had a powered input but the Superuniti didn't and neither do the new Unitis. naim used to make an affordable power supply (i-Supply) but they discontinued it. Other supplies are available - I got a cheap one and am very happy - maybe the PS doesn't make that much difference with SL.
