UnitiServ - how to get rid of AMG lookup?
Posted by: Allan Milne on 23 July 2018
I believe that the AMG database is no longer available but when ripping CD's on my UnitiServ the first few minutes are taken up (according to the NServ app) by trying to lookup AMG before going on to Music Brains and Rovi.
So how can I remove the AMG lookup stage; could not find anything that looked appropriate on the Naim desktop application?
Not a big deal since I'm not ripping much just now (too much already there to listen to but could see it being a right PITA if I do have a load of CD's to rip and waste this AMG lookup stage on every rip..
Thanks in advance,
Allan
Naim are aware of the issue of slow metadata lookups on the Unitiserve, and have said that they will look into it, so hopefully, there might be a fix. In the meantime, though, make sure you are on firmware version 1.7b which added Musicbrainz lookup in anticipation of the withdrawal of AMG.
Hopefully an update will come through soon. My HDX is a pain in the backside at the moment, taking FOREVER to do a metadata look-up..
Strangely, I have had this problem so far. Maybe it’s pot luck depending on the disc/record label?
I don't think it is dependant on the CD … when ripping the first thing the NServ app reports that it is looking up AMG and this is what can take a wee bit of time until it presumably decides that AMG is no longer available … then it goes on to Music Brains and finally Rovi.

Music Brainz/Rovi are the same I think and the final lookup is I seem to recall FreeDB. Anyway the last we heard was that Naim had analysed the issue and were sending the job to the software team, but I guess they have a lot to do at present.

My concern is that Naim are so involved with their new Uniti architecture that the "old" UnitiServ and HDX software are well down on their to do list

new naim will get all the attention iam affraid
I think they will look into it, but it will not be very high on their list of priorities. In the end, it is functioning properly, only a couple of extra minutes upon ripping isn’t it?
It may only be "a couple of minutes" but I suspect many people (me included) have a CD arrive in the post, stick it in the machine and want to rip it right away.
I currently have to stand and watch the HDX to see if it does actually recognise the album correctly . Once it has, it then starts to rip so I can then have the ten minutes time to do other things.
Multiply that by say, 5 new CD's and that extra "couple of minutes" becomes an "extra 10 minutes" minutes.
I value my time rather than wasting it, waiting for the HDX to make up its mind!
Not directly relevant but I have just ripped the new Bob Dylan - Live 1962-66 (Sony) and my US is reporting via n-Serve 'unknown album'. Lot of typing in prospect - it's a double cd.
I remember a couple of years back being very relieved when my US ripped a Rachmaninov preludes disc and found the metadata. There were 76 tracks on that CD and I was not looking forward to entering them all manually, especially as the track names were not short and snappy!

This happened also a couple of time with my HDX, I used to edit the track names using the DTC and a laptop. Opening the correct album on e.g. Allmusic.com made it to a copy/ paste action ... less typing, but still a boring job ...
I can understand cheap streamer manufacturers dropping software/firmware support for their products after a few years. But given the cost of NAIM equipment and their reputation for longevity support, I think its appalling that NAIM have stopped supporting the HDX (no android n-serve, no new firmware since 1.7b).
Makes me question my investment sometimes(?)

Just had another new cd come back as 'unknown album ' on N-serve - Fairport Convention: A Tree With Roots.
My uServer-SSD is now in near constant Scanning and Updating mode. I've restarted once via front logo and power and that solved the issue for long enough to rip theee CDs but now back to being in Scannin then Updating and when I go to RIP a CD it reports no sotrage is avialable For 2,613 CDs it's currently been Scanning then Updating for over a week. Changed from Scanning to Updating overnight. Anyone having similar or think this could also be related to the AMG issue?
uServe is now bascially a green and black brick. Thankfully have Asset on a QNAP as the main server.
If there is a HDX/uServe update due out would be good if it included the WannaCrypt patch whilst the code is open.

That sounds as if you have a fault and it may need a service.
I really don't think any of us need to worry about the Wannacrypt attack, so far as a niche embedded XP application is concerned and a patch would probably have to involve turning off SMB which Naim needs for discovery purposes I believe.

Hi David, What do you think could need servigin? The hardware appears fine, just the software appears stuck doing something. Just about to go for a database delete and rebuild and see if that resolves the issue.
WannaCrypt fix thankfully doesn't kill SMB, there would be a whole new world of pain for the whole Windows world if it had done.

Hopefully the index rebuild will sort it but otherwise if there is something amiss with the firmware, like it is corrupted or the disc has errors that mean the index gets corrupted or similar, then you will need Salisbury to sort it out. They won't supply the hard disc image for you to do it yourself for example.
