uniti wishlist

I've deeply tested my new uniti atom and here a list  of features I would like to have in a future update:

1) a way to switch off the display from the app and from the remote

2) a way to setup the preferred list order

3) a  way to browse web radios and upnp servers using the remote and the display

Do you agree? Do you have other ideas?

if I may;

4) Enable "actual" random playback by removing the 500 tracks limits when pressing the "random" icon within the app (the Qute has a workaround which allowed to randomly playback ALL tracks, including when streaming from a NAS). So bring back the "full" random playback function

5) give the user the choice to display the clock/time by default, or to display the track data permanently.

yes definitely the display needs work, it's not brilliantly implemented or utilised IMO. The ability to turn off completely and also have track info on permanently via the remote would be good for starters and cant be that difficult to sort. The display is actually quite large so I'd imagine you could have the album artwork on one side and some track info on the other as an option. Oh and the clock on permanently seems like an obvious option too

Agree with all of the above - it's about time this was sorted!

I'm surpriced they didn't solve the display issue yet !

Was promised way back

Agree with all of those, but not sure 3 is possible with the current remote as there's no quick method of sleecting tracks such as an alpha-numeric keypad - you'd be pressing the up/down/left/right arrow buttons far too much to make this properly workable.

I'd like to suggest a far more radical solution - if a tablet is a requiremnt of using the Uniti then provide one in the box. Adding a basic iPad at cost price shouldn't add too mcuh to the price of the Uniti and should be cheaper than obtaining one seperately.

Also add

6) A dedicated "standby" icon to the app - which can be set to close the app as well as put the Uniti into standby (to prevent the pesky "searching for rooms..." dialogue appearing)

7)  show the numeric volume level in the app with up/down buttons rather than the imprecise slider.

+1 for more display options

I cant see how navigating your library on that screen being of any use unless your right up close. I could do this on my old Squeezebox Touch but it ended up being pointless as its too small to see properly from a distance so always ended up using the the app. I would prefer away to do it via desktop  pc though.

+1 for numerical volume display on the app, could be done in conjunction with the slider

And:

8) The ability to change the showing of the time to the 24 hour system (used in most European countries)

Posted on: 01 August 2018 by GregWPGibbs

I concur with most of the above, but also have a couple of my own (both of which were available on my old Uniti 2).

i) speaker configuration menu; and

ii) radio alarm clock

I have a Uniti atom. I love it. However;

  • The app is buggy.
  • The display should be able to turn off (I have noticed it completely off after going to work 8-9hrs and coming back, having left iradio playing all day, so it must be possible)
  • Radio alarm clock + clock on screen would be an amazing bonus feature.

Agree with all points. For me the most important are:

- give the user the choice to display the track data permanently not just large cover art. This is particularly important when playing internet radio. In general there could be several options of 'now playing' screens - with or without small cover art etc. Squeezebox is a good example for this (and they did it more than 10 years ago).

The way everything goes in the industry (see Samsung TV's which now, when switched on, play adverts of promoted streaming services full screen on their on - others do this too) I would be not surprised if the screen will be used to display adverts in the future based on our listening preferences. I hope this will not happen here but who knows...

- a way of browse upnp servers using remote. OK. It may be awkward to use and slow but if the user needs to chose just a different folder by clicking back to the main folder of an artist and the choose different album this should be OK. Or just to see a list of tracks on the screen to choose one to play. The amount of time I waste when listening to wake up the app and then wait for this to connect then choosing servers....I cannot personally get over it. I have to sit with both phone and remote next to me. Phone to select music and remote to increase and decrease volume quickly if needed. This is really a step back when it comes to  user friendliness.

This is all-in-one device for everyone in the house which sits in the living room. Its not a sublime listening device for the 'man cave'. It should be simple to use without a fuss or special 'other' devices. The old Uniti could be operated by all my family even my 8 year daughter was able to find using remote her 'folder' to play some music and audiobooks. This has gone now. It's mine only with always on bright screen with no information on it bothering everyone in the evening,

I had really a difficult time to explain my wife how to eject the CD from my Star using the front button - she will never let me but any other NAIM product, ever. She even asked me to return it but I convinced her 'you know they will update it quickly and it will be brilliant, you will see!' Well, now I really wish I did.

- radio alarm clock - I really liked it on the old Uniti. This would be good to have if possible.

- DAB/FM module

It’s good to see that most of the suggestions are fairly basic and should therefore hopefully be possible. With that in mind I’ll add:

show track times next to titles in the app and/or a time remaining on   Album so I can quickly see if I’ve got time to play a bit more before leaving, or whatever I’m going to do if it’s not an open ended  listening session

Perhaps this should be another topic - Richard please make it so if you feel it should be - but it intrigues me when people say about time taken to get from opening app to selecting music - it usually takes me less than a second on my iPad or iPhone, which seems quick to me, so how long does it take others ?

If I’m playing from a server I don’t have to reselect  servers when waking up the app - it goes straight back to where I was previously. At worst  it goes to ABC* at the top of the artist list if I switch from another source - it remembers which server I was connected to last time I was using “servers” (I have several upnp servers the app can detect so it’s not that there’s only one to default to).

* That’s ABC as in Martin Fry and colleagues.

Hi, "a way of browse upnp servers using remote" for me is not a matter of time to open the app but sometimes I would listen to music without be disturbed or distracted by notifications ...

@Richard, please can you modify this topic title (wishlist not whishlist) thanks

I know it’s frustrating as a fellow Nova/Uniti owner. When we visited Naim as a few forum members there were various discussions, but I was unaware how critical software commands even on things that seem sound quality unrelated.......actually can make a huge difference and Naim care a great deal about getting it right. Where they can really improve on is communicating that “yes we are working on it” and subsequent updates on timing.

I know exactly what you mean Woj. I ordered the Atom very early on, and when it finally arrived it was missing so many functions, that I (and my family) had grown accustomed to on the UnitiQute. That I ended up returning the Atom and getting a new SuperUniti instead. yes it's older technology, but it can still hold it's own when it comes to sound quality. And everyone in my household can easily use it.

It might be good if Naim were able to comment on a nummer of items on this ‘wishlist’ ... some might be implemented with a future update for sure (display shut-off IIRC) but other requests might not be able at all I’m afraid ...

Posted on: 02 August 2018 by balma01

I bought the first naimuniti in 2008 and since then I have seen a lot of improvements so,  I'm confident on the Naim abilities in the development of the SW and I'm sure  they pay attention at the users requests.

If that ever happens it will be time to deploy the gaffer tape!

I would like to see support for the openhome standard. (But I am not an owner of a new generation uniti streamer.)

I think, these days anyone can manufacture well sounding audio equipment. Its not difficult and not that expensive hence lots of companies around and lots of DIY projects available. The difference, a company like NAIM can provide to sell, is a customer service, equipment appearance and user friendlies of the offered device/software. Unfortunately, as it stands now, it appears that our beloved company is either struggling to deliver or thinks that it knows better.

A fair amount of the app wish list items like buttons for vol control and track time are available on the roon app when using the new Uniti range..

Posted on: 02 August 2018 by Alley Cat

App:

Numeric volume display with a rotary gesture or perhaps +/- buttons, the slider is ok but I often hit playback control buttons by accident.

Ability to re-arrange source icons

Uniti:

Display off feature.  How about a static dim green Naim graphic?

More options for the display - currently I rarely look at it.

Easy way to quit internet radio (I bet there is one I've not realised).

Any work needed to facilitate gapless playback over Chromecast from other apps or UPnP.  We're currently limited to Roon, Airplay (which won't do hi-res) or more complex software solutions which the average user might not want to muck around with.  I can't do gapless playback via Qobuz iOS, Qobuz desktop app or Audirvana, and various other solutions have for me failed though there are a few I still need to try.

While it may be the case that it's the apps which aren't doing something correctly, the same apps I believe do gapless flawlessly on older hardware, so maybe some kind of wrapper over existing code for Open-Home compatibility.

Perhaps not possible but it would be nice to be able to disable the internal power amp if using an external one.

Posted on: 02 August 2018 by ChrisSU

Being unable to quit iRadio is particularly irritating, as it seems you have discovered. They have omitted the Stop Stream button from the old streamers, so the only way to shut the damned thing up is to navigate to some music in another input, hit play, then ckear the queue.

Posted on: 02 August 2018 by Mercky

......and the ability to put radio stations in desired order as per muso
