Precisely that!
Generic items are manufactured to operate to a known published functional specification and have no claims made about them other than that (and possibly testing showing compliance to specifications). They are 'generic' because a component from one manufacturer can be functionally replaced by another (compliant!) component from any other manufacturer.
Note that this illustration of the term 'generic' applies in many fields (generic components such as nuts and bolts, electronic components, cables, medicines...) and thus is itself a generic illustration of 'generic'!
