optimum speaker placement

Posted by: benjy on 05 August 2018

I just updated my profile, but the recent change is from nac 202 to nac282. Tremendous difference (improvement). My speakers are located in a happy compromise between optimum and room friendly. I will (probably) not be moving the speakers, but was wondering if the change to 282 would warrant moving them . Would like to hear from anyone that has made such a change and if speaker movement was or was not needed (or at least useful).

It is quite common when upgrading the source or amp department to notice more bass. With Floorstanding speakers that like a little space from back walls they might need an extra inch or so forwards to keep everything balanced.  With those lovely m30.1 standmounts you have this probably won't be an issue.

What might be of interest is in the extra resolution of details from your upgrade. Depending if you want to focus this in more or give greater breadth by shifting in or out the speakers angles relative to your listening hotspot.

When I upgraded to a 282, I found that the bass was so much better controlled that problems I had previously attributed to poor room acoustics largely evaporated. Perhaps I was just lucky, but if anything, it made speaker placement less critical.

You can always experiment with toeing them in to see if you like what comes out...
