Dual 555PS - Same two PS's for both CD555 & ND555. Is that even possible?

Posted by: rjstaines on 06 August 2018

So I have two 555PS's, and I have (say) an ND555 and also a CD555.  Do I ever play them together? ...No.

I have two 555PS plugged into my (say)  ND555.  Each 555PS has one outlet used and the other outlet unused.   Is there any reason, I'm wondering, why the two unused  outlets on my two 555PS's could not be used to power my CD555 ?   So, given neither ND555 nor CD555 will be played at the same time, do I now have both source devices powered by the optimal two power supplies?

Am I crazy?     (I answered this particular question in another recent post about my blue-spec Paul Simon CD for £47, btw  ) ...

or have I just saved £14,000 (ish)

or is this pushing frugality a step too far?

This was covered in an earlier thread.  Not at all recommended by the factory due to the earthing arrangement.  Why not just have one 555PS on one unit and the other on the other as per normal recommendation?

I know where your are coming from ......... I feel your pain .......... you know what you need to do ........ you also know what will ultimately happen... you will also need to factor in some fraim modules.....doh

I think it is the case ..... of once you have been there and lived there you can't go back...................

Roger I compared the CD555 against the ND555 last week and the results are well documented in another thread. I was thinking run both on one supply each as I knew the idea of having them both powered up using the two separate supplies as you suggest at the beginning was not recommended. The upshot is that my CD555 head unit is boxed up in a spare room as the benefit of running my ND555 with my two available supplies is considerable. Like others before me who were at first reluctant to put the CD player into retirement, I have now come to the conclusion, ‘am I ever going to play a CD again as the ND555 is so much better?’ Answer, probably not apart from for nostalgia reasons. Why compromise both the CD555 and the ND555 by running both at the same time with a single 555PS, when you can achieve a better result by using the two supplies on the new streamer or get a third 555PS as has been suggested if you really want to keep CD availability. That’s progress for you!

 lots of 555ps per household.....

OK gentlemen, it was a crazy idea... it just floated through my head so I thought I'd run it up the flagpole and see if anyone saluted... they didn't.

As it happens I have three 555PS's already... one on my CD555 and two powered off, waiting for an ND555  (I sold the NDS already). Sorry if I misled.  Behind the thought... sell one of the 555PS's, leaving me with two + some £cash.

It's very interesting that folk accept one 555 for the CD player... it stops me experimenting with one of the idle ones and connectong two 555's to the CD player;  that could  have been an expesive mistake - £6,999 to be precise.

Thanks all for the advice and return to sanity.

Rip the CDs. Sell the CD555 head unit. Problem solved.

Or, get those 2 555PS onto your CD555 and have them ready warmed up for the ND555's arrival? Or does that involve buying a CD555 specific Burndy?

No, the CD555 has two burndies already,  but what it does involve is the possibility that the CD555 with two PS's sounds so much better than with one.  That would cost me £6,999 for a fourth power supply.  And that's because I'm one of those who, having heard a piece of kit sounding better, just hears it 'broken' when returning to normal  (which is why I had two 555PS on my NDS).  It's an affliction some of us have to bear.

The only way around it would be to have two of the 555PS units on whichever unit you are using, with the third 555PS keeping warm the unit you aren't using.  Then switch around when needed. You will need to power down briefly, but that shouldn't matter too much if you don't hang about.

A nice problem to have and a nice solution.

Roger it’s simple. You will love the ND555 which would only need two supplies to max the performance. And then you could hand me the 3rd one.....

I would of course need to think a bit, but on the other hand if i can help solving your problem,.... I would be happy to....

Misread that - I thought for a moment there was a new Dual turntable on the horizon!

I'm the same, it IS an affliction....or a vice!

Roger, I had no idea you were this cheap. All that bonhomie and 'hail fellow, well met', it's a charade

Best, chris

Bert, your generosity truly overwhelms me.   But would you also take the CD555 that is powered by the third one off my hands ?   ...and how about the Fraim that supports the CD555 and the third 555PS... would you thake that too ?   Gosh, I'm almost blown away...

The venerable CD555 - it's shame I am sure a DR sub board upgrade - evolution (aka ND555/NDS) would have upped the performance yet again of this beast.......... to match or surpass everything present.........alas we will never know.........doh.

This is an interesting creative idea. I was thinking of just switching the burndies of the 2 supplies but I didn't realize that one of the head units would be left "cold". Now having one ps just to "warm up" the idle head unit is very expensive. Would there not be another possibility (less expensive) to achieve just this objective (no sound, just on)?

2 PS one moth cd one month streaming.......

Posted on: 07 August 2018 by nestor burma

I was thinking more of a "hardware" type of solution...maybe some less expensive device than a full fledged PS. Or maybe using just one of the 2 unused burndies (which one?)...not sure if that makes the electrical safety issue go away... But given that many CD555 and NDS owners may be in this situation I do think that there is a market for a Naim "heater" which would be much more simple and less expensive than a ps, probably much smaller, and would allow to switch the burndies from one device to another, and also save a lot of space in the living room!

HI Nestor Burma, long time not seen you around.... ND555 on the way?

You had this option on the NDS with a XP5XS and the  linkplug !!!!!

But not with the ND555, you need a full PS555, even only to keep it warm...

Hello Manu,

Great to hear from you. All is well here in Paris although a bit hot! Actually I have made the impasse so far on a streamer so I plan to board the ND ship sometime in the future. But I resist giving up my CD555, and would like to optimize my PS inventory!

Maybe something like what they have for buffet food to place underneath the dishes to keep them warm...?

I have been running a CD555 with two power supplies for a couple of years now. As soon as it was "in situ" I didn't want to return to just the one. So I am sort of ready for the ND555, cost permitting!. Yet I have a real liking for the CD555 even if its just a black box and a heavy one at that. Jason from Naim has indicated the ND with ONE power supply as superior to the CD player with one.

I've heard the ND555 at my local dealer and obviously impressed, but at this level home demo is the final decision maker. Am I dissatisfied with the CD player? far from it so no big rush YET to change. If you have heard better it can be difficult to go back sometimes.

Douglas.
