NDS Second Hand Pricing
Posted by: Terrysmi on 07 August 2018
Given the ND555 has now landed and is having such a positive reception, im expecting to see quite a few second hand NDS's on the market. Keen to get people's view on what that will do to the price you can expect to pay for one ?
In my country appr 4300EUR including 2x Burndy
Well poor old Roger of this parish had to sell his NDS for spares or repairs when he realised it was broken after buying an ND555. I think he got £3,500.
In that case I think Roger did rather well based on a recent sale on that well known auction site.
Re-reading Colloms review of the NDS in Critic last night, a used NDS is a bit of a bargain for the performance on offer.
For the NDS, some may even consider trading to an NDX2 (ND555 a step too far financially), so it may see resale value pressure from both the ND555/NDX2.
I suppose it all hinges on NDX2 vs NDS55 and also the NDS.
I traded my NDX for an NDX2 today. Hope to have it in a month.

i was hoping that the new ndx2 will have more immediacy and boogie factor vs the nds, with a bit less refined sound and less details, as it was the case in the cdx2 vs cds3 .
But after the recent review in Hifi news, it seems to be the contrary, the nds having a bit more boogie factor and naim sound vs the ndx2. So unfortunately, for budget consideration, i will go toward the nd555, when funds will permit. Of course it’s a dream to have this beast, but it is also very expensive....
I am going to listen with my own ears rather than this review, I as hoping for a more refined Nova, but still with the boogie factor.
I am pleased that the new NDX2 is no better than my NDS, and costs almost the same. My NDS is not going anywhere.
What if anything do the ND555 and NDX2 share, or is NDX2 more a separate box Nova
The streaming board is new to Nova and NDX2 and all of the new Streamers including ND555. The NDX2 has the same DAC as the Nova, same streaming board, but has the amplifiers removed and the Naim improvement-on isolation etc. The ND555 has a different DAC, and much more isolation of ......everything.

you are right, it is only a review buy one person. I will follow the views of persons in this forum, when the ndx2 roadshows will begin. And certainly listen to it at my dealer place.

Thanks GAZZA, interesting though the Nova based NDX2 is rated so close to the NDS (Nova is bloody good).
Roll on the demos

Perhaps while the NDX2 is based on the Nova, it must have a few tweaks. For one thing, the real estate from the power amp in the Atom can be used to spread the remaining circuitry in the NDX2. Both have the Burr Brown DAC--not sure if they are the same--I read that the ND555 has the Burr Brown PCM1704. The NDX2 also has the Burr Brown DAC, but the Naim web site does not mention whether its the legendary PCM1704 or not--anyone know for sure? The NDX2 has the benefit of coming a little later in the introduction cycle, and perhaps the design cycle, so lessons learned from the Atom may be incorporated into the NDX2. I certainly would not shy away from the Atom if I had conventional speakers, I am running the one ohm Apogee Scintillas, and they are best with an amp designed for arc welding!
I suppose I am just justifying the NDX2, as I just agreed to trade in my NDX for and NDX2. Tough choice between the X2 and doing the XPS on the NDX. At some point in the future, I expect that I will XPS upgrade the NDX2.

I suppose it is inevitable that second hand values of NDSs will take a hit during the initial rush to the ND555, with a (temporary?) glut of NDSs on the market as owners dispose of them to part fund a ND555.
It is possible that this phnomenon might be a temporary one, as numbers of NDSs on the second hand market decreases when the initial dash to the ND555 subsides. There will be an initial spike in ND555 sales from the early adopter but this could settle to 'normal' levels for an esoteric and costly bit of kit.
If I am right and second hand NDSs rise then fall in availability, and considering the, admittedly one and only review so far, put the NDS a little ahead? of the NDX2, this could cause the value of second hand NDSs to hold up well, particularly if you agree that it is Naim's next best streamer in SQ terms after the ND555. I also suspect there aren't so many out there with £12k burning a hole in their pocket for a posh new streamer (excluding power supply).
Or is this a NDS owner deluding himself?
That sounds like a very logical argument, Nigel. But you also need to consider the inevitable risk of price increases, which may be even greater owing to the dwindling buying power of sterling in the supply chain.

Can you provide a URL to this review? I can't find a review online of the NDX2, which hasn't shipped yet.
Hello Nigel
"Or is this a NDS owner deluding himself? ---Yes you are deluding yourself just like I am deluding myself that the NDX2 will be the best streamer for me from Naim. The fun part, is that both may be true. The NDS may be the right one for your setup and the NDX2 may be the best one in my setup. Best part, is that each of us can enjoy the Music while I suspect that we both pine for the ND555.
For me, the ND555 would be a big nut, but I could do it. The two PS555's to go with it, make it out of the question. I cannot ever imagine investing that much money in this secondary passion. I suspect that my future NDX2 will be of great joy for a while, but I will probably do a PS upgrade down the road. Another consideration for me and the NDX2 was that I still had money left over to get the Fraim, Power Conditioner, and the cables that I need.
Clear Skies
Enjoy the Music

Hi Bailyhill,
….and your primary passion is….?
I love the way my NDS makes music, but you are right, what self-respecting Naimee wouldn't hanker after a ND555? Truth is, attending to my speakers (and possibly my pre amp, which I believe is the heart of any Naim system or power amp) would probably give me a bigger bang for my buck (especially if I go ex-dem or pre-loved) than a shiny new, full-priced, expensive streamer, even though I possess the power supply to go with it. I think we can all be a little blinded by the the latest shiny new thing at the expense of a smarter upgrade elsewhere in our systems.
That is the sound of a (previously) deluded NDS owner giving himself a severe talking to.

Hello Nigel
….and your primary passion is….?
Its Astronomy. I have an observatory in the white mountains of New Hampshire, USA, and a remote setup in the Sierra Nevada Mountains in clear and dark skies. The New Hamshire site is very dark, but in New England, we have poor weather. The Sierra site has about 280 usable nights per year, while the New Hampshire site is more like 120. I do research on Variable Stars mostly.
Oh yes, and I do enjoy driving my BMW X3d--never modded or tracked, just my daily driver.
So all this is secondary to a happy and healthy family.

Cool....makes listening to music sound a bit lame.
'...a happy and healthy family' being top priority - I'll second that! So true.
Have a great evening (actually afternoon where you are).
