roon - what am I missing?
Posted by: Frank Yang on 07 August 2018
I have 4000+ albums in a QNAP NAS plus subscriptions to QoBuz and Tidal, and I am running Audirvana plus with UPnP on a dedicated MM. So I can play Tidal masters and Qobuz sublime+ with Audirvana plus streaming from my MM regardless whether my source is from files stored in my NAS or Tidal masters or Qobuz 192/24.
So my question is, what am I missing? What does ROON give me what MM + Audirvana plus UPnP does not? Should I pay $500 for all the things that I do not need?
Interesting topic.
Do I understand the following correctly:
1) Roon must be installed on my PC.
2) I tell Roon then where my local music on my PC is stored.
3) Roon can access my music stored internally in my Core.
4) I can control my music on the PC and on the Core with Roon either via Desktop or iPad Roon app?
5) To do this, my PC with Roon must be switched on and online.
Thank you.

1) Yes, or you can run it on a NAS.
2) Yes, Roon will search your network for music folders, not just the computer it runs on.
3) Yes
4) Yes
5) Yes
Cool. Many thanks.
Roon will search for music stored on my PC, but can I also manually tell it which folder it needs to have?
Like if I don't want to use a folder for example with temporary music on it...

You have to tell roon where to find your music regardless whether it is on your PC or on a network drive, or in a folder on an internal/external drive, and you can tell it to ignore any folder.
Basically, there is no black magic.
Sounds great. Thanks.

As Frank says, you have to tell Roon which of your music folders you want it to access. This may involve a small amount if head scratching, but you only have to do it once.

Hi Thorsten,
If you want to run Roon with your current system (as in your profile), you'll need to add a Roon-ready bridge in front of your nDAC. An alternative is to use the USB output of the computer on which Roon Core is installed, and a USB to S/PDIF converter (e.g., HiFace 2) to connect to the nDAC. If you stay with the latter route, addition of a USB isolator / regenerator (e.g., Intona USB high-speed isolator) into the signal path is worth doing.
Hope this helps,
Jan

While Roon may be able to access the media on the Core I don't think it could use the Core as an output device - as far as I'm aware the Core is not a Roon endpoint and does not have the RAAT 'engine' that the other Unitis have - just in case you were considering trying Roon to output via the Core's SPDIF output.

Oh. Thank you... I apologise. I updated my profile.

Thanks. That means I can't choose my Core in the Roon software so that the Core sends it through the nDAC to my ears?
Deal breaker then. Ok.

I don't believe so, but I hope I'm wrong.
You are correct
Roon does output on the Core, that is why I am able to send music via SPDIF.
frank , what was connected to the Core? as far as i understand it the Core is not a Roon output device

So, practically speaking, I sit on my PC. I tell Roon which music I want to be included (Core and PC). I choose the Core as output device in Roon and the Core plays then the music through my nDAC?

The Core is my Mac Mini - So when I start Roon on my MM, go to Settings -> Audio, it immediately recognizes the system output, the built-in output, various USB outputs, Airplay and various streamers (aka networked devices) that I have in the house, it even sees a couple of my old Airport Express'es lying around the house as Airplay output devices. You can then pick any output you like on the Core when you are playing your music.
You can control the Roon Core using your latop, iPad, iPhone, etc. In my case, my MM is headless, so I run a Roon control app on my Windows 10 Surface Pro.
Frank, I think there may be some confusion - your 'Core' is the 'Roon Core' i.e. the device running the Roon software - Thorsten wants to use a 'Roon core' on PC to control audio output on his Uniti Core - this is what I think may not be possible - I don't have a Uniti Core so may be wrong but I don't think the Uniti Core has the RAAT software needed by Roon to control output from the Roon Core.
Yes, there seems to be some confusion here between the ‘Roon Core’ and the ‘Naim Core’. Roon Core is the main Roon software that runs on your computer, and as the Naim one is not a Roon Endpoint, it would need a network connection.
The Roon Core computer can then play via SPDIF into a DAC.
Yep, I got mixed-up, I thought Thorsten meant the Roon Core
Btw, the Roon DSP sounds awful, flat, mushy, muddy, disabling it bring back the familiar crisp, clean, fresh sound that I am used to. Maybe I do not know how to set it up properly.

Depends on what your doing with DSP and what your wanting to achieve.
DSP cannot correct all room prop lems - e.g. with nulls all you will domin trying to boost te signal is risk blowing the speakers. It is best used after physically correcting as much as can be, and then in moderation.
Roon, or any other software, offers no better sound quality than iTunes when playing ripped CDs as Apple Lossless, bit perfect. I don't understand why few use iTunes and Apple Lossless. Apple's remote app on iphone or ipad also offers remote control of iTunes. Multi room is handled by Airplay. When you update OS X or IOS everything continues to work, unlike Audirvana or Roon which have to continuously play catch up with OS X or IOS updates.

Gimme a break! Roon has nothing to do with sound quality, and everything to do with managing your library. It also updates itself seamlessly. Please try it?
Seriously, I have tried it and liked it, it was my second favourite after iTunes. iTunes manages my library of CDs just fine, no problems whatsoever. Roon did not offer any better sound quality.

Wow! Must give iTunes another try. I must be missing something.......
