Superuniti Obsolete

Posted by: Dalamtian on 08 August 2018

I have a case of upgradeitis and I’ve been looking to change my Superuniti. I auditioned the new Nova and wasn’t overly impressed with it, I’m looking at getting a 272/200 combination as this was a massive leap forward in terms of everything I like about the Naim sound.

It still is a fantastic sounding thing and offers all of the connectivity I could ever want but as it doesn’t support the latest Chromecast etc is it now obsolete?

I’m not sure if you are asking about the SU or the 272. The latter is likely to be replaced by a version with the new streaming platform in due course. Chromecast is only relevant if you want to use it. The SU or 272 are no more obsolete than the NDS, CD555, CDS3, CDX2 etc etc.

Not while you're still using it. My cassette deck is obsolete (Richard's Nak isn't because he still uses it) and there can't be many DCC players still in use, if there ever were, but a SU is still a viable way to play music.

Sorry I wasn’t clear, I’m referring to the Superuniti, I know how good it is but is the market dictating it’s no longer desirable?

When something shiny and new appears, the old one can seem less shiny and the value can suffer as a result. But that doesn’t make it any worse. If you still like it then that’s all that matters. As you say, the 272/200 is miles better, but then it costs more and should be.

Depending on your speakers you may want to think about a 250DR, perhaps used, rather than a 200. If you go the 200 route with a 272, the DR of the 200 isn’t relevant and you can save a lot by getting a non-DR used 200.

Can’t you attach a Chromecast dongle to one of your SU’s optical inputs?

Yes, and an Airport Express, and a server, and a Roon Endpoint, and all the other things the Nova has that the SU doesn’t. Won’t make it sound any better, but if the extra functions matter to you, there are ways.

Hi Nick - interested to hear more on your impressions of the Nova. I read and hear only good things re. sound etc. Any specific issues you identified?

I would be buying used so a 250 would be preferred but all depends on the price I could get one for.

I listened to the Nova on two separate occasions at different dealers and found it sounded “thin”, there was more detail but it didn’t float my boat. I didn’t have one on home dem with my own speakers so i haven’t given it a “proper” listen to also a lot of the features are of no use to me. Im going down the used 272/200/250 route.

I thin!? Not here ., it hasn’t got the upper bass hump of older naim but thin it ain’t..

What is this upper bass hump? I think a total myth... I have some older Naim and new Naim and no upper bass hump on any of it. What is more relevant is amp, speaker matching me thinks.

I own a Superuniti and have heard a decent demo of the Nova.
Soundwise, I don't feel the Nova is a significant step up from the SU, if any step-up in terms of SQ.
I guess some folk might feel it's "obsolete" in terms of connectivity but, next year, Chromecast etc. might be obsolete themselves...

SuperUniti remains as good as ever. Meaning excellent. Adding a power amp works for some. Not others. Seems to depend on the speakers. Tread carefully. A again no surprise that the separates will sound better. We would all just have a SuperUniti if they didn't.

If you haven’t already a power line gives the superuniti a good boost in performance.
