Nait 5 volume

After a brief hiatus away from Naim, I chanced across a bargain Nait 5, and thought, yes I really really would like remote control again, so newly serviced Nait now in place. I am wondering why you have to turn the volume control at least to 11 o clock before any decent sound is produced? That is listening through a phono stage (Nakamichi ca-5 pre through tape out). When turned by hand the volume starts at 7 o clock, but when controlled by remote it starts at 9 oclock and no decent sound is heard until 12 oclock. Speakers are Ruark Talisman II, room is medium. I like the amp so far, but I am also getting buzzing when my streamer (Pioneer n-50) is connected, I have to disconnect it for the buzzing to stop (buzzing through the speakers). Amp is fine if a cd or phono stage are connected, no buzzing there.

Who serviced your Nait? That sounds like rather odd volume control behaviour, I would talk to them about it.

You may have an earth loop if you have more than one earthed source connected. With Naim sources there is a little switch on the back so that you can ensure that only one source has the earth connected, but with other brands, a different solution may be needed.

The NAIT5 uses a rather unique (among Naim amps, shared only with the NAC112/112x) volume control arrangement, a resistor ladder and volume encoder.  As such it acts rather differently to a regular volume pot and you get far more control range, so you do tend to need to wind the knob further.  However, do make sure that the inputs you are using are not trimmed down too far - each input can have its volume level trimmed up or down. Check that out - well worth reading the manual on this feature.

The buzzing is probably being caused by the Pioneer N50 having a floating earth which is then using the interconnect to earth itself via the NAIT 5. You could try an isolator or else try running a thin piece of wire from the Pioneer chassis to the NAIT's chassis or earth point.

Thanks Richard, I returned the Nait to its factory settings by pressing prog and then disp. Think it may'be lacking a little power for my room, it was a bargain, so might look into getting a Nap 150 in the near future. Amp was serviced last year at Naim.

Well, I'm listening through my phono stage now and volume is at 2 o clock, its distortion free, and is loud enough for that visceral feel. Volume levels though phono stages differ so  much anyway, what with cartridge compliance and the like.

My Nait 5 gets going around 12 o clock on the dial, and is singing at 2 o clock, quite normal for a Nait 5. In no way would i consider adding a power amp to the 5, it sounds worse, not better. I tried a 150X as i had one spare, but it didn't hang together like the bare unit. On another occasion i tried a Supercap DR on the 5, which had some great moments, stunning in fact, but overall i felt it was just slightly too much. As always, Naim had it right at the beginning,  and if you want to get more from the Nait 5 (i happen to think it beautiful as a standalone), then a Flatcap is the way to go. The Flatcap gives it a lovely little lift whist retaining the balance that makes a '5' such a joy to listen to.

Yup, I'd agree with Gary here; a Flatcap is the way to go.  I tried my old FC2 on a NAIT 5 that i couldn't say no to a few years back - it enhanced just about everything with no drawbacks save the extra money and extra box.

100% agree, before I traded up to a SN1, I was running a Nait 5 with FC2, very nice combination

I've got s nait5 in use at the moment.Bags of power and don't need to turn it up higher than 10 o'clock

Look at the instructions as with the narcom remote you can adjust the volume of each input individually.

The jist of this is something like this:

You click on pre amp  on the Narcom remote then hold the prog key on remote until the light on the volume control flashes on the amp. Select the input on the amp you want  to adjust. Then use the volume on the remote to adjust. Push prog key again on remote and then the volume control can be used normally.

Repeat for each input.

I'm amazed how powerful this amp is!

Yeah its a great amp, I wonder how many they actually made in its short period ?

Perhaps the next Nait collectors item ?

A Hicap ain't too shabby on the Nait 5, either. (All of this is kind of making me regret selling mine.)
