Naim Supernait 2 + Nap 200 DR or 250 DR

Posted by: Tramat on 12 August 2018

Good evening,

First of all, admin thank you for the admitting to the forum. My name is David, writing from the north of Italy. I own the integrated amplifier Naim Supernait 2 powered by the external power unit Naim HiCap DR, paired to Harbeth HL 5Plus  40th anniversary loudspeakers. Adding to the Naim Supernait an additional amplifier, the performances will really improve?. Which model of Naim amplifier between Nap 200 DR and the Nap 250 DR will be the right choose, please ?

Cheers,

David

Bad idea on all accounts, I’m afraid. And to be honest I’d change your dealer - he has his best interest in mind, rather than yours.

First of all - SN2 is a fine integrated amp. It responds well to PSU upgrades. Adding a power amp to it doesn’t really yield much of an improvement.
Passive bi-amping in case of Naim does not seem to be very popular.

In my opinion you now have a seriously un-balanced system. In order to drive your B&Ws well you may end up having to trade your SN2 for something in a range of 282 or 252 with a SuperCap and NAP300DR.

Conclusion from my ‘rant’ - leave your SN2 as it is, just add a HiCapDR for now.

how do you see the option to add to my integrated amplifier Naim Supernait 2 an external amplifier Naim NAP 250 DR, in order to drive the Bowers and Wilkins in bi-amplification ?.

A waste of money and purpose. Why own a flagship integrated and add box for amplification? Go separates to begin with. Your B&Ws aren't terribly demanding and the SN2 ought to power them adequately. If I was that concerned with bi-amplification I'd probably be looking at active speakers.

David - you are not building this system in a sensible way. The place to be putting the money is your sources, the Rega and the the Marantz. You have had lots of very good advice on here, which you appear to ignore. Rather than improving your sources you have bought expensive speakers that you are now worried about driving properly. It is a mistake to buy things because they seem to be a bargain. It sounds as though your dealer is thinking ‘ah, here comes David, I’ll try to flog these B&Ws I cannot sell to him, he’ll buy them if I tell him they are a bargain. And then I can tell him he needs another amplifier....’. He is not acting in your interest. So - don’t add a 250 to the Supernait. Get as good a source as you can - a Planar 8 or an RP10. Then later, swap the Supernait for a 282 and 300.

Good morning, thank you for your replies. I have not ignored the suggestions, but before making mistakes I have decided to write here what in my mind was passing trough. Also in this case I was wrong. Please, community, accept my apologies.
