Asset UPnP Soon Available on Synology NAS
Posted by: Adrian_P on 13 August 2018
Hi, just thought I'd bring this to Synology NAS users' attention in case it was missed in an earlier thread: Asset UPnP R6 is currently in beta and will soon be supported on Synology NAS units with an Intel CPU that has 64 bit support. See Mr. Spoon's reply here:
https://forums.naimaudio.com/topic/new-nas-1
You can install and test the beta by downloading the package ".spk" file and doing a manual install with the DSM Package Manager. See the Asset beta forum for more details:
https://forum.dbpoweramp.com/s...et-R6-beta-Mac-Linux
I have been running the 64 bit Linux version on my Synology NAS for some time without issues but the software is now packaged as a proper Synology software package and so is easy to install and manage. I don't know whether this will eventually become a package listed in the standard package set but doing a manual install from Package Manager isn't too difficult. If it is listed alongside MinimServer as an installable package it will be even easier.
This means that most modern QNAP and Synology NASes will be able to run both Asset and MinimServer so you're no longer forced to go with QNAP if you want to run Asset.
Update: No reply from Illustrate, very disappointing.
OK I'll do something without them, I re-installed it this pm. It loaded OK & it showed on the app & would open OK. Problem was the UI link was not showing on the Synology installed screen so not able to fine tune my preferences, I tried various things to get to show including another delete & install.
Bottom line is I'm jumping ship back to Synology's Media Server, its a shame as I really do like it (when its working). But unless Illustrate get involved, plus I'm travelling for a while, maybe better if I hold on for the official public release
I typically do not have patience to "beta test" for others. Other than Naim...been a faithful tester of the Naim App betas for a while now!
There is definitely a bug with the updating of the package info page but you can always access the Asset web UI by pointing your browser at http://your-nas-ip:45537 -- the same port is used on all platforms.
I reinstalled last Saturday with Beta-8, again the UI link did not appear so connected via NAS.IP/45537 & bookmarked. I all worked OK & I got my config preferences up & running. Problem is I'm now away so can't get into it for the next week.
Back & up & running with Beta-10, still no UI link so I'm using the Chrome bookmark
Mike, clicking the "Open" button on the Asset page in the Package Manager will also open the config page.
Hi Adrian, maybe I'm being a bit thick on this but I don't have or know what you mean by Package Manager. Can you point me in the right direction.
Sorry Mike, should have said "Package Center". Open it, click on the Asset app then click the Open button (the one that doubles as a drop-down).
Nope, I don't see any Open button, all I have is Stop & Uninstall. Maybe you are linked with a full release Asset package, I have only the raw beta package.
How odd. I'm running the same beta 10, I also have an Open option on the menu when the app is in the started state.
I installed beta 10 today and the URL in package center flashes in and out. The URL is standard so it should not be an issue to configure Asset, but clearly they have not quite got the Synology installation wrinkles ironed out yet.
I don't get anything, flashing or otherwise. I have a URL link to the UI so configuration access is not a problem, but like you say its not been de-wrinked yet.
The obvious next step with this is to post on the Illustrate Asset beta thread, but I'm reluctant to do so as an Asset newbee & with stuff not working as it should, & me not knowing what should be going on, it makes my observations questionable. Any expert volunteers?
Illustrate say the missing/flashing URL link is now't to do with them, "We have no control over this, we only provide the information (port number) in Asset's package manifest." its a Synology problem.
I've updated to beta-11.
It is very strange. I also have MinimServer installed and I've never seen Minim's management URL flashing in and out. I had a a look inside the package manifest files for Minim and Asset. There's an adminport specified for both but Minim also has checkport="no" set. I tried adding this to the Asset manifest but it didn't help. Perhaps it has something to do with the way Asset allocates that port,
Anyway, as was said in the Asset forum, Mike, you should be able to open the management page by clicking the Open button for Asset on the Package Center main page or in the Asset config page itself. Can you see the Open option now?

No, it the same as the screen shot I posted 15/09/18, other than that nothings changed as far as I have found (so far). The only difference I've found is a folder "AssetUPnP-Data" has appeared in Control Panel>Shared Folder, it was not there with a previous release, beta-8 I think.
The AssetUPnP-Data folder has been around for some time. It's where Asset stores your config data, license key and music database. A change made in the current beta11 is to hide the share from File Station -- previously if you opened File Station you would see the folder listed with all your other shares. Illustrate don't want you messing with these files manually so they have sensibly hidden it. So, while you should see it listed in Control Panel>Shared Folder, it should not now be visible in File Station.
That you still don't see any Open option in Package Center is odd. I wonder if you have a clean install? There should now be an Open option for Asset in Package Center>Installed and when you click to see the Asset app page.
Hi Adrian; when I first loaded an Asset beta - I think it was beta-6 - the AssetUPnP-Data folder was in the Shared Folder. That install also had the link to the GUI. Then Asset crashed on me I uninstalled & went back to Synology Media Server. I then gave it another go & loaded beta-8, the AssetUPnP-Data folder was NOT in the Shared Folder, this install also did not include (show) the link to the GUI. I did not check to see if AssetUPnP-Data was there with beta-10 Now with beta-11 AssetUPnP-Data is in the shared folder.
I've too have been pondering how good this install is, does it have an issue, missing or bad links. The missing GUI link & 'Open' tab seems to indicate a bad install, so I've uninstalled (again). After uninstall I checked & noted the AssetUPnP-Data folder is still in the Shared Folder & I've also deleted this. Additionally with this uninstall I've included a system restart in an attempt to clear out any detritus that may be present.
Now with beta-11 install as per above: AssetUPnP-Data folder is NOT in the Shared Folder. There is NO GUI IP#:45537 link. There is NO 'Open' tab - only Stop & Uninstall. I had to go back into Configure to reset my preferences. Apart from that Asset works.
I'm posting this on Illustrate/Asset beta forum

That's the main thing, isn't it. The issues here are all fairly minor and relate to the package integration with Synology -- the core UPnP server is running fine. I hope that Illustrate can put the effort into adding the final polish to the Synology port, but the emphasis from their forum threads and feedback is on the operation of the core UPnP server.
I asked Illustrate forum how it was going (concerned it had stalled) Reply from Spoon. "We will publish through the Synology store shortly, we are getting confident in the full release"
Update: Nothing much happening, nothing new & no comms.
When beta 12 came out I completely deleted the previous version & reinstalled in an attempt to get a GUI link, the GUI link still did not appear. Its OK as I installed manually with NAS-IP#:45537. Aside from that its working OK running WAV & DSD only. Waiting for beta 13 or release candidate
Funny you should say that, Mike. With beta 12, the Open option in Package Center has disappeared for me as well, but the flashing URL is also gone completely. It's odd because I don't think you have seen this for several betas, while it has remained for me up to beta 11. Anyway, all still working fine but there is no simple way for a new user to open the admin web page to configure Asset.
Spent a frustrating hour with my eldest yesterday installing a Synology DS115J (ARM based) NAS and an ex-demo ND5 XS. I was going to install Asset on her Synology, but apparently the only way to do that on an ARM based synology is to faff around with command line stuff using the Raspberry version. Needless to say, my patience was soon exhausted and I just installed MInimserver for her. Working fine.
The synology (online) manual is crap, BTW. Badly organised, doesn't have an "idiot's section" telling you how to copy music from an external hard drive onto it, etc, etc.
I've left Marisa (my daughter) to install a desktop shortcut to the Synology's music folder herself. I've got so used to Macs, that I can't remember how to do it on a WIndows machine!
Is a proper version of Asset upnp for ARM based Synology on the way?

Yes. Asset 6.2 will support ARM and Intel Synology NASes. This thread is discussing the beta for that version, mainly from a Synology perspective. You could have installed the beta which would have saved you time messing about with the RPi version, but looks like you are up and running with MinimServer.
Once released, Asset 6.2 will be available as a package from the Synology Package Center making installation simple.

........... or I suspect more likely as an Illustrate Asset purchased release as is done with QNAP & other versions.
Dungassin the v6.2 beta for Synology is dead easy to install, nothing like the faff that is the Raspberry lash up. Download the file from Illustrate & install manually from the Synology Package Centre, let it install & index & its all set. Its work in progress but its easy & it does work.
Thanks. The offending Synology is in Goxhill, N.Lincs. I live in Staffordshire. Unless Marisa is unhappy with Minimserver, I'll leave things as I have already. She's very pleased with her 'new toy' (ND5 XS), BTW. Hopefully her husband will be too when he gets back from the Antipodes (currently teaching IT and management strategies- he does this as self- employed person)
Just noticed that their new puppy (a 3/12 old Cockapoo) has chewed one of the arms of my cardy. Think I'll hide it from SWMBO!
