Asset UPnP Soon Available on Synology NAS

Hi, just thought I'd bring this to Synology NAS users' attention in case it was missed in an earlier thread: Asset UPnP R6  is currently in beta and will soon be supported on Synology NAS units with an Intel CPU that has 64 bit support. See Mr. Spoon's reply here:

You can install and test the beta by downloading the package ".spk" file and doing a manual install with the DSM Package Manager. See the Asset beta forum for more details:

I have been running the 64 bit Linux version on my Synology NAS for some time without issues but the software is now packaged as a proper Synology software package and so is easy to install and manage. I don't know whether this will eventually become a package listed in the standard package set but doing a manual install from Package Manager isn't too difficult. If it is listed alongside MinimServer as an installable package it will be even easier.

This means that most modern QNAP and Synology NASes will be able to run both Asset and MinimServer so you're no longer forced to go with QNAP if you want to run Asset.

I've had a strange event on Asset.  I was alerted yesterday morning as the Synology was not hibernating & the HDD's were making a clunking noise,  indicating, the noise especially, that something was very wrong.   The Synology GUI showed the RAM indicator was in the orange sector (meaning >80%) & a few flashes in the red meaning >90%,  its normally around 25%.    Looking into the DSM Resources screen I could see aprx 5, sometimes more, lines of Asset UPnP running, everything else was sleeping. Going into the Synology Package Center I turned Asset from "Run" to "Stop", that immediately lost the Asset lines in the Resources screen & the RAM returned to normal +/- 25% usage.

Communicated with Illustrate (Spoon) who didn't know the cause apart from the possibility that something else on the network is using/linking to my Asset.  .  Suggested to restart it & monitor.  That done, RAM is around 25%, checked the NAS hibernated indicating the Synology is completely inactive.    It's remained all OK overnight & this morning it was hibernating as it should,   RAM is still 25% & nothing is going on in the CPU other than idling.    This looks like a one off event, cause as yet unknown but it's on my watch list.

I saw your report on the Asset forum, Mike. Hope it's a one-off.

The 512MB in your NAS doesn't leave you with a lot of breathing space given Asset's caching requirements. Are you running Synology Media Server at the same time as Asset? I wonder whether turning off the Synology server (and disabling any other packages you don't need running) might free up a bit more memory for Asset.

Hi Adrian,  512MB should be enough.  I've never seen any high RAM usage issues even when I had a lot more programs running.   Its been OK for all the Asset beta rev's I've used,  no hint of RAM issues.  This was a one off,  something caused Assets knickers to get twisted & whatever it was,  'it' caused the RAM issue.    Question is what,  that should be a warning flag for Illustrate & needs further investigation IMO.

Media Server is uninstalled,  I used both togther during beta 8,  but its uninstalled since beta 10.    I now only use this NAS for music & only have Search & File Station (both of which can't be uninstalled) Hyper Backup & Asset installed,   RAM typically runs between 23 & 28% no matter whats running.
