Best speakers for 555/552/500
Posted by: Zackwater on 17 August 2018
As I set here on a rainy afternoon my thoughts are wandering to what speakers you would consider for a nd555/552/500dr system? I’m intrigued by ATC active speakers but good luck finding anything above a scm100 in the USA. I’m considering Kudos and own Focal. Magico are a lot of money. Just want to hear from some of you that may have already made this decision. And please, don’t reply if your answer is “you have to listen for yourself”, I get that.
You will need a big one...
Grand Utopias???

Not in that price range. Even though it’s a big room, I never set over 4m to 6 m back from the speakers.
Davone Grandes if you can find a place to audition them. There are dealers in San Antonio TX, Layton UT, and Memphis TN; I don't know which is the closest to you. I love mine thru a "measly" 300-level system, in a room about the same size as yours.

and forget Magico. I’m very disappointed with them.
Sorry to hear about the Magicos. I've enjoyed hearing them but have only heard them with very high current amplification.
Without a doubt - Focal Utopia Scala III Evo!
None (IMHO) from the rest that mentioned above comes close!
Follow your ears only.
If I had your system ZACKWATER in my room the YG Acoustics Carmel 2 would be very high up in the list of speakers to try.
Zackwater posted:My room is rectangular around 20’ by 40’ (around 6m by 12). There’re is a hallway leading into it that one set of speakers sets near the wall with the open hallway beside it. On the other side is a standard corner with the speaker not in the corner but few feet off it.
Nice size, even if one dimension is unfortunately double the other.

The theoretical optimum position would be about 4.6m (38%) from one end, with the speakers at that end, usually away from the walls so plane of front of speakers to listening position maybe rather less than even 4m - though of course other positions may also work well...
Zackwater, with that kit you are in a awesome position!
My guess verry few speakers will be a bad fit electrical or power vice. The question is more to find a speaker that suits your room and personal taste. I had dynaudio c2s but after a move the bas became to prominent for my taste and I wanted something leaner, so I thought standmount or sealed box...
I only got around to listen to two speakers the latest sonus faber standmount (reflex) and Magico S1 mk2 (sealed). The Magicos intrigued me enough to arange a home demo, even if they were a bit to lean and almost shrill in the demo there was hints of quallities that I thought could work for me in my room. I newer heard the brigger models but assume they must be awsome in a 500 series system and I believe could be easier to get to work in most rooms compared to reflex designs.
my shortlist
sealed: Magico, YG (not heard but get good feedback and was my next stop if S1 had not done it for me), if I had a suitable solid wall SL2s
relex: Dynaudio confidence, Kef Reference, PMC, Sonus Faber... (the list becomes long)
electrostat: Quad esl
dynaudio confidence or dynaudio evidence ??
I would try Sonus Faber Olympica 3 or Wilson Sabrina
There are some fine speakers mentioned which without going into my preferences(because they are irrelevant to your ears and room)......narrow down at a dealer(s) to those you really like and get a home demo.
Let me ask a question related to this. I have a pair of Focal Maestro Uptopia and rel g1 mark 2 subs, of all these speakers mentioned which ones have the most/riches bass so that I could eliminate the subs?
Hi Zack,
I went on a similar search for my perfect pair of speakers for my CD555, 552/500. Just like this thread, many fine pairs of speakers were mentioned and I ended up with a pair of Kudos 808's. I have heard most of the alleged best pair of speakers over the last ten years or so but for me, the Kudos do everything I want in abundance.
What I would suggest is you narrow the list down to say three or four and then have an extended listen to each pair, preferably at home and go for the one that you prefer.
I agree.
Hmm, 6m x 12m is a pretty big space to fill... you already have the Maestro Utopia, which is good down to 25Hz... my ‘little’ Scalas bottom out at around 27Hz. In my room 4m x 5m these work well, so you have about 2.5 times the volume. The Maestro has a 2nd bass driver, but obviously this is not enough to give you the room filling bass you desire. This needs a seriously big, powerful speaker... have you considered moving your gear into a smaller room? I’m not convinced that the usual Kudos recommendations will help much in this scenario.
Remember to focus on the naim sound. If you like the naim DNA forget about the speakers that rose tint the sound. Eg Sonus Faber.
I have a good friend with 552-500 DR system headed by NDS/cd555 and his SL2 speaker work just fine. Maybe not For your room, but as an example. Got to get that pRat!!

Others would kill for a decently sized room like that! You don’t need normally to ‘fill’ the room with sound, rather have it sound good at the listening position, which might be only maybe 4m from the speakers, though of course in a room that size there is the option for something on a grander scale.
SL2 will do you, if you can source them and find a good dealer to install them.

You are so right about wanting it to sound good at my listening position. It’s all about the first half of the room. I have 9 theatre chairs, 2 rows, and that’s what matters. I just need a little more bass that what the maestro uptopia provides and/or better subs for loud music. It’s great at moderate to soft music. The subs bottom out on lots of songs when the volume is cranked up. Maybe the answer is different and more subs. The highs and mids are great on the maestros just no bottom end

I am guessing Zack wants plenty of rich bass. If the Focal Maestro Utopia's don't satisfy his bass needs the SL2's won't be suitable for him. Now if he could source a pair of DBLs??
Sub woofer comes to mind. However the sl2 isn’t a party speaker by any means imo.
For that preamp/power amp combination another contender try B & W 800 D3. I use 802 D3 in a considerably smaller room with outstanding results. My dealer has demoed the 500/800 in his showroom with no problems.
Douglas.
Probably been said but
Kudos Titan 808!

Ooh no. Tried 'em, didn't like 'em. Sent them back after a month's home dem. Active ATC 100's on the other hand... tried 'em, liked 'em, kept 'em (and sent the NAP500 back).
Each to his own of course.
