Naim App playlist bug (again) ?
Posted by: Ikoun on 17 August 2018
Well, after watching more than 10 pages, i don't see anybody having my problem. Recurrently, my playlists in the Naim App simply disappear. To see them again, i have to quit and launch the app again. Do anybody have this problem too ?
Is there any solution ?
It happens on any devices, Iphone 6S and 8 as well.
Thanx for your help ;-)
It’s really best to create playlists on a server. This way they will be accessible from all devices.
Are the playlists created on the Naim app, and if so, are they created on a Core, or just on the app controlling your streamer? Or are they created on a server and viewed in the app. UPnP input. The solution to your problem, if there is one, may depend on which of these three ways of creating playlists you are using.
Yes it happens on my iPad too.
Chrissu - they are stored by the app on the device they were created on, so on the iPad in my case.
Sort of solution - stop the app, restart it and wait about 15-20 minutes - chances are they will reappear (don’t let the device sleep or it’ll stop loading). You can help it along by adding another song to the playlist (which will still show as available). You may see only part of the list initially.
The cause, at least on my iPad, seems to be that the app eats memory - it therefore takes it time to load the playlists in. It also seems to show by updating apps from the App Store which takes an age. This doesn’t seem to happen on my iPhone, which is very odd (same IOS version). My iPad (Mini, type 4 with 128Gb memory) shows as having 4Gig of non storage memory and the Naim app seems to take over 3.5Gig of it. This may explain some of the other app oddities people report. By and large this is the only real “problem” I have with the app.
I have found playlists created on the app to be unreliable since the first day the Naim app was released, mainly as they are prone to corruption in addition to the issue you mention. For that reason, I use my Unitiserve and the N-Serve app for playlists, which then appear in the UPnP input. Other servers can do this too, although it may be a little less convenient that creating them within the Naim app, but at least they are always there.
I as well have found that storing playlists in the Naim app on the iphone or ipad had several negative consequenses.
First, you don't have the same playlists on both devices (or three, if I include the wife's iphone as well) - it would be nice to access the playlists no matter where they were originally created.
Second, when updating or reinstalling the app, I have lost my playlists on that device.
Can someone tell me a simple way to create playlists on the NAS, so that I can play them from any decice running the Naim app ?
I use Minimserver on a Netgear NAS. I use Foobar 2000 for metadata editing.
Thanks,
Claus
I can’t tell you how to create playlists in Minimserver, maybe someone who does this will chime in. It’s very easy on a Unitiserve.
Naim app playlists are stored on the iOS device, not the streamer, so they are specific to that device. This might be an advantage to some, as each individual has control of their own playlists. As a workaround, you could transfer playlists from one iOS device to another, but they will not update automatically.
Hi I use playlist creator, as per the below. Works very nicely for me,
Thread on Linn (ahem) forum:

Extract below:
i - I thought I would give Playlist creator a go and after just a little bit of fiddling around I seem to have created a playlist and I can play it from minimserver and play it both on DS and ipad etc. exactly as I had wanted. So thanks to everyone for your help. Playlist creator is a free download. Simple and functional. The settings I used were - selecting the folder in which I will store my playlists - called Playlists, and which is placed alongside my artist folders (all in a folder called FLAC). Set 'Save playlist is set to Relative' and tick the box which says 'use forward slashes instead of backslashes. And voila - it was as easy as that. I just go down my folder lists in window explorer and drag the songs/albums etc across and into playlist creator. Seems all too easy bearing in mind the hassle earlier. I will update if there are other things I discover. Thanks again everyone. |
Thanks both.
Boris, I will try the Playlist Creator, just checked their website and it seems to be an option. I will have to create "global" playlists from the PC though, usually I have done this with the Naim app while choosing and listening to music and then simply saving the selected songs. Not a major issue.
Chris, can you in a few words tell me how to transfer playlists from iPhone to iPad ?

Play playlist on device A. It then becomes a play queue. Close device A.
Open app on device B. Save play queue as new playlist.
Sounds amazingly simple..!
Thanks, will try tonight.

Yes, it is simple. Just remember that future changes to one playlist will not automatically update the other one. If you want to keep them in sync, you will have to do to ‘manually’.
Thank you for all your answers and my apologize for my late come back ;-)
Yes, i use the app to create the playlists, as a mac user, i didn't found a software to create playlists. Anyway, it is good to know for the naim team to be aware of this problem. If the app allows to create playlist, i would prefer it not buggy ;-)
Also, as a asset user, i realised that each time you upgrade, you have to make your lists again, the app do not find the tracks anymore.
So f there is a software to create playlist on mac, let me know.
Thank you by advance.
Cheers
Well, with the advice given to me above, perhaps you could keep identical playlists on 2 ios devices, keep them both updated, and whenever you loose one of them simply copy back from the other device.
Needs a little attention on making new copies whenever you change the lists to keep identical copies on both devices.
- or am I missing something.. ?
Yes you are missing something. The initial bug is that almost all the times, once you go on the list of playlists in the app, if you come back, they don't appear anymore. The only way to see them again is to restart the app after quitting of course. The fact to transfer the list from a device to another is simple and works great but it doesn't solve the problem. These list are made with the app as said before. Also for unexplained reasons, once you upgrade the Asset software, the lists created in the app still exist but do not find the tracks anymore. An error message appear explaining the tracks are not available anymore on the disks.
If the playlist are made with an external software and stocked on the disks, then it seems to be a more stable solution but i am not sure such a software exist on Mac.
Thank you.
I used to have the same problem and got the same advice, “create playlists on a server” which which to be frank I didn’t really understand since the facility is available on the App, but since I’ve been using Minimserver on my newly acquired SuperUniti the playlists I’ve saved are all there. All that happens is when I tap on a playlist a white line runs across the bottom of the page straight away and the tracks do play fine. On previous occasions using my Uniti 1 & 2 I’d get a message saying tracks not available on the server or the white line would take an age to move across the screen. I might be wrong here but maybe a much larger RAM on my NAS is helping me here? but I’m happy to be corrected on that..
Hope that helps..
Mike..
Gosh, anyone wondering why some of us remain wholly unconvinced by the streaming experience might want to start here.
Ikoun,
I understand that you can use TextEdit on the Mac to create m3u playlist files. You simply need to copy the filepaths of the playlist tracks and paste these into your text file and save it as a m3u file.
Thank you Sjbabbey, could you write me down a small example ? It is still foggy for me.
Thx
OK. Here is a short extract from a 1960's compilation I put together:
/share/Multimedia/Music/CD Music/S to Z/The Byrds/Mr. Tambourine Man/01 - Mr. Tambourine Man.flac
/share/Multimedia/Music/CD Music/A to E/Donovan/The Collection/01 - Catch the Wind.flac
/share/Multimedia/Music/CD Music/A to E/Bob Dylan/Biograph/33 - Positively 4th Street.flac
/share/Multimedia/Music/CD Music/S to Z/The Who/My Generation/03 - My Generation.flac
/share/Multimedia/Music/CD Music/F to L/Howlin' Wolf/Killing Floor/03 - Smokestack Lightning.flac
/share/Multimedia/Music/CD Music/S to Z/The Byrds/Fifth Dimension/07 - Eight Miles High.flac
The "/share/Multimedia/Music/CD Music etc." follows the directory structure of my files on my QNAP server where the files are stored. Note that the directory separators are forward slashes (/) as these are used in QNAP/Linux as opposed to backslashes (\) used within Windows.
Also note that all links start with "/share" which is the convention for playlists in Asset UPnP.
I created this playlist by copy/pasting the filepaths into Windows Notepad whereas you would use TextEdit on the Mac. I did have to do some find/replaceall editing e.g. changing all "\" to "/" and amending the root directory from the QNAP's mapped drive directory to the standard Asset/QNAP path of "/share/Multimedia".
Once edited I saved the file with an .m3u file extension instead of the usual .txt notepad extension. You can, of course reopen the .m3u playlist in TextEdit should you need to (re)edit it at any time.
Thank you VERY much ! I will give a try ;-)
Cheers and best regards.
Hi Ikoun,
I'd suggest you try a simple playlist with just 2 or 3 tracks to start with. You will also need to point Asset to the folder where you will be saving your m3u playlist files.
Well i tried but even with your great explanations, couldn't achieve a positive result. Asset doesn't see anything :/
Thank you for your time.
