Which NAS for the Unity Core
Posted by: Thorsten_L on 18 August 2018
Hi there!
I have asked a similar question before...so forgive me.
Right now I use a 2 TB SSD in my Unity Core and a 2 TB external HDD on my FritzBox as a "NAS".
If I would like to go the real NAS way for my Core, which NAS would be
a) easier to setup for the Core and
b) easier to be found on the network by the Core?
Basically, Qnap or Synology...
Thanks a lot.
Is the NAS to be additional storage or just backup? For storage, I can’t see that it matters much. For backup, my main consideration would be the ability to run a server you are happy with, so that if your Core dies, you can use it to play music while waiting for a repair, replacement or whatever. I use a Synology (running Minimserver) to back up my Unitiserve, and it does a good job.
Thank you, Chrissu.
In my case, it would be mainly to enlarge the storage so that I would have 2 TB on the SSD and maybe a NAS with 2 x 6 WD Red ( 2 TB + 6 TB for music).
I use Qnap TS 251, it shows up on the Naim app along with the music files and is easy to set up and use. I think any well respected NAS will be OK. Use mine purely for backup of the music collection and household computers and phones since getting the Core.
Thank you, Rich.
So, I understood that I can use the NAS to backup my SSD in the Core or I can "expand" my music with the 6-8 TB on the NAS.
Now, if I would like to put all my music on the NAS and run for example Asset as a music server on it, how does this work with the Core then? How does the Core "recognize" Asset and so doesn't use its own internal music server?
If I remove my SSD and want playback only done with the NAS and for example Asset or Minimserver, how is this accomplished?

The Core will not recognise Asset, they are both UPnP server software packages that do essentially the same job. Both servers will, however, find and play music folders located on either their own internal drives, or other drives on your network. If you have a library containing a mixture of CD rips and downloads stored in multiple locations, the Naim server on the Core will present them as a single library for you to view and play on the Naim app. I imagine Asset can do this too, but I don’t use it.
Ok. Thanks.
So I think I will keep my SSD and add a NAS for expanding the music library for the Core to play.
Don't forget that should you wish you can set up a folder, perhaps called Naim Music on the NAS drive and set that up through the Naim app as a music store meaning that you would no longer need a drive in the Core. You still might need to consider a remote backup as even a 2 or 4 bay NAS can be destroyed in a fire or flood. You would also need a backup of your existing collection, to, through the Naim app, restore to the new music location. Rich
Many thanks.
